Track and Field Announces 2010-11 Schedule

Sept. 22, 2010

NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State men's and women's track and field teams announced their 2010-11 indoor and outdoor schedules Wednesday. The track and field season will consist of 22 meets, with three being hosted in Horton Field House.

The Redbirds will kick off their 2010-2011 indoor season at home in Horton Field House, Dec. 4, at the Redbird Open. ISU will then have a month-long break over the holiday, but will return to action in Terre Haute, Ind., Jan. 15 against Valley rival Indiana State. From there, ISU will return home for the Illinois State Invite, Jan. 22, and end the month of January on the road in Champaign, Ill., at the Illinois Intercollegiate Jan. 29.

"On the indoor schedule, we try to keep it as close to home as possible, but still get quality meets and tough competition," director of track and field and cross country Elvis Forde said. "The competition at the Iowa State Classic and at the Meyo Invitational is usually very tough, and they are good preparation before the conference meet that comes up later in the indoor season. The meets are also good gages to see where we are with our training."

February will bring five meets for the Redbirds, with the first tournament being the Meyo Invitational, Feb. 4-5, followed by Keck Ecumencial, Feb. 5, and the Iowa State Classic, Feb. 11-12. From there, the Redbirds will travel to Charleston, Ill., to compete at the Eastern Illinois Twilight Meet Feb. 18. ISU will compete at the 2011 MVC Indoor Championships, Feb. 26-27, at Northern Iowa.

March will draw an end to the indoor season for the Redbirds, but first ISU will compete in three meets. ISU will split its team in two for the weekend of March 5 for the last meets of the regular season. The Redbirds will compete in the Alex Wilson Invitational and the Last Chance Meet, both on the weekend of March 5-6. The NCAA Indoor Championships will be held March 11-12, where individuals can compete if they have top marks and times.

The Redbirds don't have much time to rest, as the 2011 outdoor season gets underway just weeks after the indoor season ends. ISU will debut its outdoor season on March 26 at the Saluki Spring Invitational. From there, the Redbirds will compete in six meets during April.

Illinois State will compete in the Big Blue Classic, April 1-2, in Charleston, Ill. On April 8-9, the Redbirds will compete in the Sea Rays Relays in Knoxville, Tenn. The weekend of April 15, the Redbirds will split their teams into two, with one team going to the competitive Mt. Sac Relays in Walnut, Calif., while the other team goes to the Gateway Classic in Edwardsville, Ill.

"With the outdoor schedule, we are going back to the Drake Relays," said Forde. "We have student-athletes that will be able to compete at the meet. We will also go down to Tennessee to run in the Sea Rays Relays, which will give our athletes a chance to compete against athletes in the SEC. We use these tougher meets to prepare our kids for the Valley Championships. "

The Redbirds will compete in the Lenny Lyles Invitational, April 22. ISU will travel to Des Moines, Iowa, for the Drake Relays, April 28-30. ISU will then compete in the final meet of the regular season at the Billy Hayes Invitational on May 6.

The Redbirds' post-season meets will begin May 13. Illinois State will compete in the 2011 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Championships at Cedar Falls, Iowa, May 13-15. The NCAA West Regional will be May 27-28, for Redbirds who advance past the conference meet.
