Glover, Smith Each Take Gold at 2012 NACAC Championships
July 7, 2012
GUANAJUATO, Mexico - Illinois State junior throwers Tim Glover and Brittany Smith each won gold at the 2012 North American Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) Under-23 Championships, as each competed for Team USA last evening. Smith took control in the shot put, while Glover claimed his in the javelin.
Smith got it rolling for the Redbirds, as she was the first to compete for Team USA in the hammer throw. She managed a throw just under her personal-best of 224-06, finishing second for a silver medal. Her throw of 220-01 (67.10m) is the second furthest of her career and good enough for Team USA to finish one-two atop the podium, as teammate Amanda Bingson of UNLV took first (234-02/71.39m).
Later in the evening, Smith took to the shot put ring, throwing 55-10.50 (17.03m) to capture her second medal of the championships and first gold of her career. That throw was just three feet off her personal-best and seven inches further than Team USA teammate and runner up Alyssa Hasslen (55-03.75/16.86m) of Arizona.
At the same time as Smith was throwing the shot put, Glover was on the javelin runway, redeeming himself from a disappointing sixth-place performance at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials a week ago. Glover mustered a throw of 256-10 (78.28m), beating Olympic Trials Champion Sam Humphreys (252-09/77.04m) of Texas A&M for the gold.
This is the most medals the Redbirds have accumulated at one time at an international competition, and the first golds of the competition since the origination of the NACAC Championships.
