Two Redbirds to Represent USA in 2012 NACAC Championships

July 5, 2012

NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State junior throwers Tim Glover and Brittany Smith head to Guanajuato, Mexico, to compete for Team USA in the 2012 North American Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) Under-23 Championships July 6-8. Glover will throw the javelin, while Smith will throw both the hammer and shot put.

Glover earned his spot on the team, after claiming his second-straight NCAA Division I National Title in the javelin, throwing a career-best 268-00. He is the second Redbird in history to successfully defend his title and the first since Tom Smith in the high jump in 1987 and 1988. Most recently, Glover finished sixth at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials, throwing 250-00. Prior to the trials, he was named a semifinalist for the Bowerman Award by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), while also receiving its award for National and Regional Male Field Athlete of the Year. Those accolades add to his third-straight Missouri Valley Conference title, as well as his second-straight Valley Most Outstanding Field Athlete award.

Smith claimed two runner-up performances at the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, scoring 16 points for the Redbirds en route to the team's highest finish at the championships in school history (14th). Her mark of 58-09.50 in the shot put and 224-06 in the hammer solidified her spot as a Team USA member for the NACAC Championships. She was also an Olympic Trials qualifier, finishing 11th in the hammer (216-07) and 10th in the shot put (54-06.00). The six-time All-American claimed three runner-up performances at the Valley Championships this spring, after earning the Tony Wilson Award at the Sea Ray Relays for the Most Outstanding Female Field Athlete of the meet. She holds every Illinois State throwing record, except for the discus where she ranks No. 2, and was a Capital One COSIDA Academic All-District selection.
