EUGENE, Ore. - Illinois State graduate Leigh Petranoff finishes the javelin qualifying round in 12th place to advance to the trials and finals on Sunday at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials at Hayward Field. Junior thrower Brittany Smith finished the shot put finals today in 10th place, concluding her competition at the trials.

Petranoff was the last to throw in flight two of the qualifying round and opened with a throw of 156-01 (47.57m) to move into 14th place. She bettered that mark on her second attempt, throwing 164-08 (50.21m), moving into 11th place and solidifying her spot into to javelin trials and finals on Sunday.

Smith entered the shot put competition as the No. 11 qualifier and was randomly selected to throw first in the rotation. She opened with a mark of 52-11.50 (16.14m), before bettering that on her second attempt to 54-06.00 (16.61m), which would stand as her best. She would finish the trials in 10th and not advance to the final round, as only the top eight went on, ending her competition at the trials.

Smith was the only dual-event athlete representing Illinois State at the trials, and will continue her season next week representing Team USA at the North American Central American Caribbean (NACAC) Championships in Mexico for the Under 23 competition. Petranoff is slated to return to the javelin runway for the trials and finals on Sunday at the Olympic Trials.
