EUGENE, Ore.- Illinois State junior thrower Brittany Smith finishes 11th in the shot put qualifying round, advancing to the finals on June 29 at 2012 U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials at Hayward Field.

Smith opened the competition with a throw of 54-11.25 (16.74m), before fouling a big throw of over 59-00.00 on her second attempt. She failed to better that mark on her third attempt, advancing to the next day as the No. 11 qualifier. The throws from today will not carry over into the trials and finals, as Smith will be given three new throws with the chance of three more if she finishes the trials in the top eight.

Smith will step to the shot put ring at 5:30 p.m. central time, to make her mark at the trials. In order to qualify for the 2012 U.S. Olympic team, Smith would have to throw the Olympic A standard of 60-00.50 (18.30m) and finish within the top three that have already eclipsed this standard.

Along with Smith, recent Illinois State graduate Leigh Petranoff will make her trials debut in the javelin as the sixth-ranked thrower in the competition. She will take to the runway at 4:30 p.m. central time for the qualifying round of 24.
