Brittany Smith Finishes 11th in Hammer at Olympic Trials
June 21, 2012 PORTLAND, Ore. - Illinois State junior Brittany Smith finished in 11th place in the hammer throw competition at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials at Hayward Field to kick off competition for the Redbirds. Smith opened with a throw of 216-07, moving her into 10th place with two throws remaining. Her second (209-09) and third (210-11) marks failed to better her first and improve her placing, as only the top nine advance to the finals. One final thrower managed to jump her on her last throw, moving her into the final position of No. 11. This concludes Smith's hammer throwing for the season as she ends it with a career-best and NCAA runner-up throw of 224-06 set earlier this month at the 20121 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. However, her season is not done, as she will compete in the shot put qualifying rounds of the trials June 28 at 5:40 p.m. Tim Glover will be the next Redbird to make his debut in Eugene, Ore., as he will step to the javelin runway for the preliminary rounds at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 23.
