Tim Glover Named Men's Field Athlete of the Year
June 13, 2012
NEW ORLEANS - The United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced Wednesday that Illinois State junior javelin thrower Tim Glover is the 2012 NCAA Division I National Men's Field Athlete of the Year for outdoor track & field, as voted by the nation's head coaches.
Head track & field coach Elvis Forde feels that Glover was well deserving of this award.
"Every time an athlete receives an award of this magnitude, it signifies his or her achievements and hard work," Forde said. "No one has worked harder than Tim, and he is well deserving of this award. I would be remiss if I didn't give assistant coach Erik Whitsitt credit for making sure Tim was ready to compete all year long, especially with the expectations he had on him from last year. Tim can say he was the best field athlete in the nation this year and hopefully it gives him a chance at the prestigious Bowerman Award, which honors the top male and female track & field athlete of the year."
En route to this honor, the Normal, Ill., native won his second-straight NCAA title in the javelin, posting a new personal-best throw of 268-00 (81.69m). That fourth-round throw he launched set a new Illinois State and Missouri Valley Conference record, and keeps him the No. 9 performer of all-time in the NCAA history books. His mark was also the third-best in meet history and the best since 2009.
His six-throw series at the championships consisted of every throw measuring over 235 feet, with two throws over 250 feet. Prior to the championships, Glover was the top-ranked thrower of the year in the college ranks (266-09/81.31m); which he achieved at the Sea Ray Relays in April. In addition, the three-time MVC champion was picked by Track & Field News to win the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials at the end of June.
Glover, along with three other Redbirds, travels to Eugene, Ore., next week to compete in the U.S. Olympic Trials, June 20-July 2. Glover begins his Olympic quest June 23 at 2:30 p.m. as he will compete in the javelin qualifying round.
