Tim Glover & Erik Whitsitt Named Region Athlete and Coach of the Year
June 5, 2012
NEW ORLEANS-Illinois State junior Tim Glover and Assistant Track & Field Coach Erik Whitsitt were named Midwest Region Field Athlete and Midwest Region Men's Assistant Coach of the Year, Monday, as announced by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
A native of Normal, Ill., Glover is this year's collegiate leader in the javelin, having marked a best throw of 266-09 (81.30m), ranking him ninth on the all-time collegiate performers list in NCAA history. The three-time Missouri Valley Conference champion was named the recipient of the Tony Wilson Award for that performance at the Sea Ray Relays for the Most Outstanding Field Athlete of the meet. He earned Most Outstanding Field Athlete at the MVC Championships for his nation leading mark and conference title. Glover is one of four Redbirds who have punched their tickets to Eugene, Ore., to compete in the 2012 United States Olympic Trials at the end of June.
Whitsitt is in his third year of coaching the throwers at ISU. En route to his regional honors, he coached the men's throwers to 41 of the team's 90 points at the 2012 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Championships in May, with three earning a spot at the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds in Austin, Texas. At the prelims, he coached two of them to a NCAA Championships bid this week in Des Moines, Iowa (Glover - Javelin and Akil Mills - Hammer).
Glover will step to the javelin runway Thursday, June 7 at 2:30 p.m., as he prepares to defend his NCAA National Title from a year ago. ESPNU will televise Saturday's action from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. (CST). The entire event will be streamed live through ESPN3.com, with the exception of Wednesday, June 6, which will be streamed at www.NCAA.com. All streams are available for free.
