June 3, 2013
ST. LOUIS - Seven members of the Illinois State women's track & field team were named to the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete team, as announced Monday by the league office.
Thirty-six men and 43 women were named to this year's Valley Scholar-Athlete team. This honor is given to student-athletes who have maintained at least a 3.2 grade-point average (GPA), are at least a sophomore in academic and athletic standing, and placed in the top eight in an individual event or top three in a relay event at the Indoor or Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Seniors Brittany Smith (3.68 GPA | Mathematics) and Elise Sigg (3.90 GPA | Nursing), along with juniors Rachael Brewer (3.66 GPA | Marketing) and Kristen Zillmer all earned the honor, after claiming their first individual conference title in their respective events. Smith won her first shot put title indoors and followed that up with another title outdoors in the hammer throw, while Sigg claimed her first title in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Brewer's title came on the indoor circuit, where she out-kicked Wichita's Aliphine Tuliamuk-Bolton in the mile, while Zillmer's title came in the 1,500-meter run at the outdoor championships.
Kelly McShea (3.42 GPA | Elementary Education) was also named to the Valley Scholar-Athlete team, as she finished second in the 1,500-meter run and third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase outdoors, and third in both the 3,000-meter run and mile indoors for four all-conference honors. Kim Christensen and Ashley Kamin were the last two to earn a spot on the team. Christensen finished eighth indoors in the 5,000-meter run, before finishing second and fifth in the 10,000- and 5,000-meter runs, respectively, outdoors. Kamin's honor was earned running a leg on the distance medley relay at the indoor championships.
Zillmer and Smith, along with Sade Sealy and Tim Glover return to the track June 5-8 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., for the 2013NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Fans wishing to follow that action can do so on GoRedbirds.com or on Twitter via @ISU_Track_XC.
