Smith Named to Academic All-District V Team

May 30, 2013

NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State track & field senior Brittany Smith was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District V women's track & field/cross country team, as voted on by College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Thursday. She was a first team selection.

Head track & field coach Elvis Forde feels Smith is well deserving of this award, both athletically and academically.

"Everyone knows how outstanding of an athlete Brittany is," Forde said. "Sometimes it goes unnoticed how stellar she does in the classroom as well, especially for a mathematics major, and an award like this lets everyone know she puts in the same effort off the track as on it. She has a bright future ahead of her and she will be exceptional at any profession she chooses. She will serve as a great ambassador for our program and the University as well."

Smith started her 2012-13 campaign on a high note, throwing a career-best 70-07.00 (21.51m) in the weight throw at the Redbird Open, earning a national ranking of No. 2. She carried that performance over to finish second at the Missouri Valley Conference Indoor Championships in the event, before winning her first Valley title in the shot put with a season-best mark of 56-09.25 (17.30m).

After qualifying for the NCAA Indoor Championships, Smith earned her seventh and eight All-America honor, finishing fifth in the weight throw and sixth in the shot put. She holds every ISU throwing record indoors, as she closes the book on her career as a Redbird.

On the outdoor circuit, Smith entered the season with a lot of expectations, after finishing as the national runner-up in the shot put and hammer throw. She won her first outdoor MVC title in the hammer throw with a mark of 218-10 (66.71m), before taking second in the shot put with a toss of 57-00.25 (17.38m). She qualified for the NCAA West Region Preliminary round in those two events plus the discus, and advanced to the NCAA Outdoor Championships, June 5-8 in Eugene, Ore. She will compete in the shot put and hammer throw at Oregon.

All while building a strong athletic resume, Smith has maintained a high standard of excellence in the classroom, as she holds a cumulative grade-point average (GPA) of 3.68 in mathematics.
