Eleven Redbirds Named to the Valley Scholar-Athlete Team

ST. LOUIS - A total of 11 Illinois State track & field student-athletes were named to the 2012 Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Track & Field Scholar-Athlete Team, as announced by the league office Wednesday.

Thirty-seven men and 55 women were named to this year's Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete team. This honor is given to student-athletes who have maintained at least a 3.2 GPA, are at least a sophomore in academic and athletic standing, and placed in the top eight at the Indoor or Outdoor Track and Field Championship.

The Redbird women placed eight team members on the scholar-athlete team, including 3,000-meter steeplechase champion Kristen Zillmer. The sophomore, who maintains a 3.63 cumulative grade-point average (GPA) in special education, won her first MVC title in the event with a time of 10:35.82. Other honorees include All-valley performers Becky Anderson (3.56 GPA | Physical Education), Elise Sigg (4.00 GPA | Nursing) and Brittany Smith (3.70 GPA | Mathematics). Anderson took third in the high jump with a personal-best mark of 5-08.75, while Sigg took second in both the steeplechase and 5,000-meter run with times of 10:40.45 and 17:40.20, respectively. Smith finished second in all three of her disciplines, posting marks of 222-10, 56-08.75, and 176-04 in the hammer, shot put and discus, respectively.

Rachael Brewer (3.56 GPA | Marketing), Rachelle Harbert (3.65 GPA | Mathematics), Aisha Praught (3.31 GPA | Geology) and Emily Swift (3.41 GPA | Elementary Education), also earned scholar-athlete team honors. Brewer posted two top-five finishes during the outdoor championships, while Harbert finished fourth in the pole vault with a mark of 12-02.75. Praught did not compete in the outdoor championships, but was crowned the indoor mile champion, as well as, posted two other top-three finishes for Valley honors in the 3,000-meter and 5,000-meter runs. Swift took seventh outdoors in the pole vault with a height of 11-09.00.

 

 

On the men's side, Curt Jensen (3.41 GPA | Construction Management), Coty Kramer (3.70 GPA | Accountancy BS/MPA) and Mike Ziegler (3.23 GPA | Business Administration) found themselves among the 37 men named to the scholar-athlete team. Jensen was crowned MVC champion in the shot put where he threw a career-best 61-05.75, while taking third in both the hammer (197-08) and discus (162-11) en route to be named the MVC Most Valuable Athletes for the 2012 season. Kramer finished the outdoor championships with a sixth-place finish in the 400-meter dash where he posted a time of 48.09. Ziegler reached new heights in the pole vault, claiming fourth at the championships with a personal-best height of 16-10.75, ranking him second all-time in ISU history.
