April 2, 2008
ST. LOUIS - Illinois State track and field senior Alex Straughn was named Missouri Valley Conference Field Athlete of the Week, as announced by the league office this afternoon. Over the past weekend, Straughn tied his indoor personal-best and hit a regional qualifying mark in the triple jump with a distance of 49.11-25 at the Southern Illinois/Gill Athletics Spring Classic held at Lew Hartzog Stadium in Carbondale, Ill. The jump is the 16th-best in the country and surpasses the regional qualifying mark by eight-and three-quarter inches.
Illinois State assistant track and field coach/jumps Tim Thompson, has been working closely with Straughn and is happy to see that Straughn's hard work is paying off.
"From indoor conference until now Alex has really been trying to push his abilities by doing the little things," said Thompson. "He has been pushing himself in the weight room to become stronger, going to the athletic trainers to get the treatment he needs and spending extra time in practice working on technical aspects. I think that Alex realizes that this is his senior year and he wants to go out as one of the best jumpers in the NCAA."
The St. Philips, Barbados native also placed third in the high jump, clearing a height of 6-04.75. Straughn currently holds the league's best triple jump and is No. 3 in the high jump. This week's honor is Straughn's third Valley Athlete of the Week accolade of the year and fifth for his career.
