ST. LOUIS - Illinois State senior thrower Brittany Smith was named the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week. Valley Commissioner Doug Elgin made the announcement Wednesday, based on Smith's performance during the week of March 18-24.
Now in its 14th year of existence, The Valley's Scholar-Athlete program honors its student-athletes for their athletic performance for a one-week period and academic success in the classroom.
Just weeks after finishing her senior indoor campaign at the NCAA Championships, eight-time All-American Smith opened her outdoor campaign at the UCF Invite in Orlando, Fla. The senior entered the meet as one of the top-returning throwers in the shot put and hammer. With little practice outside, the Oak Park, Ill., native mustered a throw of 209-07 (63.89m) in the hammer throw, finishing second by just 10 centimeters and claiming the No. 5 spot in the nation. If that wasn't enough, she came back the next day to make a statement in the discus throw, finishing with a mark of 176-06 (53.80m) for first place. As a result, she ranks fourth in the nation in the event and No. 1 in the Valley in both the hammer and discus. Smith holds a 3.66 cumulative grade-point average (GPA) in mathematics.
To qualify for Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing.
Smith will not compete this weekend, as part of the Illinois State men's and women's track & field teams head to Carbondale, Ill., for the Bill Cornell Spring Classic. The other part of the team, the women's distance crew, heads to Palo Alto, Calif., for the Stanford Invitational.
