ST. LOUIS - Illinois State junior Rachael Brewer was named the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week. Valley Commissioner Doug Elgin made the announcement Wednesday, based on Brewer's performance during the week of Feb. 18 through Feb. 24.
Now in its 14th year of existence, The Valley's Scholar-Athlete program honors its student-athletes for their athletic performance for a one-week period and academic success in the classroom.
The Illinois State women's track & field team finished third at the Missouri Valley Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships, tallying 122 points, with 69 of those points coming from the distance crew. Burdened with racing the distance trifecta, Brewer took it upon herself to do most of the damage for the women's distance crew, scoring a total of 26-of-69 points for the squad.
Her championships began Saturday, with the 3,000-meter run. Brewer ran side-by-side All-American Aliphine Tuliamuk-Bolton of Wichita State the majority of the race, falling short and finishing second with a personal-best time of 9:38.70. The two duked it out again on Sunday in the mile, in a sprint-finish fashion, where Brewer ran herself to a first-place finish with a personal-best time of 4:49.32, four seconds faster than her previous career-mark. If that wasn't enough, Brewer bounced back one hour and 50 minutes later to run in the 5,000-meter finals, again, chasing down Tuliamuk-Bolton. Once again, Brewer found herself on the podium, running a time of 16:50.79 for second place.
Throughout the course of the weekend, the Tuscola, Ill., native raced a total distance of six miles, averaging an overall pace of 5:15 per mile, while racking up three All-MVC performances and one individual Valley championship. The marketing major holds a cumulative grade-point average of 3.63 and was named to the All-Academic Cross Country Team (Feb. 25) by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
Brewer has now earned this honor twice throughout the course of the indoor season, and was also named the Valley Track Athlete of the Week (Feb. 6), for her performance at the Meyo Invitational the previous weekend.
Before the start of the indoor season, Brewer and the rest of the women's distance crew captured their second-straight Valley title in cross country, as four members of the squad finished within the top-10 for All-MVC honors. Brewer was the first Redbird across the line, finishing the 5,000-meter race in 17:31 for second place on the Redbirds' home course.
For her efforts during the cross country season, Brewer received All-Midwest Region and All-Valley honors, and was named to the MVC Scholar-Athlete team. In addition, this is her second Athlete of the Week honor, as she was named women's cross country Athlete of the Week Sept. 18.
To qualify for Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing. Redshirt freshmen and first-year junior college transfers are not eligible. In addition to the academic qualifications, student-athletes will be evaluated on their athletic performance for a one-week period.
Brewer, along with a few other members of the women's distance crew will head to Notre Dame this weekend to compete in the Alex Wilson Invitational, as a last chance effort to qualify for indoor nationals.
