ISU Track & Field Ready for Boilermaker Invitational

NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State men's and women's track & field teams head to Purdue this weekend to compete in the Fred Wilt Boilermaker Invitational at Lambert Fieldhouse, Saturday, Feb. 16, in West Lafayette, Ind.

The one-day meet kicks off Saturday morning at 9 a.m. CST with the women's pole vault and high jump competitions. Track events are slated to begin promptly after the National Anthem at 10:50 a.m. with the women's 5,000-meter run final. A total of 12 teams and a number of unattached individuals are slated to toe the line against the Redbirds in this final tune-up before the 2013 Missouri Valley Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships, Feb. 23-24.

A number of Redbird regulars will be taking the weekend off, however Brittany Smith will take the ring in both the weight throw and shot put competitions. She will take on two-time defending Big Ten champion and No. 8 nationally-ranked Dani Bunch of Purdue in the weight throw. Bunch's career-best mark is 68-11.75 (21.02m), while Smith's is 70-07.00 (21.51m). The two will duke it out again in the shot put, where Smith holds a season-best mark of 55-11.25 (17.05m), compared to Bunch who has tossed 54-09.50 (16.70m) this season.

Other field competition will see Amy Harvoth, Amanda Rafidia, Jake DeJaegher and Josh Prosser in the high jump, with DeJaegher doubling in the long jump alongside Adonis Hill and Demetri Alimissis. The pole vault will see Redbirds Emily Swift for the women, and Nick Bednarek and Alexander Wielbik for the men. Allie Virgilio is the lone ISU competor in the triple jump.

On the track, Antonio Farley, Javar Cruz and Antonio Foster will head to the blocks for the 400-meter dash on the men's side, while Shandel Ellis, Jenna Combs and Kiana Foreman will do so for the women. Printassia Johnson will attempt to improve her season-best time of 7.73 in the 60-meter dash, as the conference championships approach. Tyler Rippel will run in the 600-meter run, in an attempt to keep the consistency of racing heading into next weekend.
