ST. LOUIS - For her Valley-leading performance in the 5,000-meter run last weekend at Notre Dame, junior Rachael Brewer was named the Missouri Valley Conference Female Track Athlete of the Week by the league office Wednesday.

Head track & field coach Elvis Forde believes Brewer is deserving of this honor.

“Rachael has been running extremely well and it showed this past weekend at Notre Dame,” Forde said. “She has made great strides from last year and we might just have to give her another crack at the 5,000-meters so she can move herself up the nation’s descending order list and have a chance of competing in March. As long as she keeps doing what coach [Jeff] Bovee tells her to, I remain optimistic about her chances of moving on to the [NCAA] indoor championships.”

In her first 5,000-meter race of the season, Brewer toed the line against some of the nation’s best runners at the Meyo Invitational this past weekend. With an opening mile split of 5:17, Brewer showed her toughness, splitting the second mile in 5:20, before finishing the race with a personal-best time of 16:41.14 for fifth place. That time crushed her previous career-best time by 33 seconds (17:14.37), and ranks her No. 3 in the Redbird history books in the event. She also moved herself to No. 20 on the national charts and ranks first in the MVC by over 19 seconds. The Tuscola, Ill., native also holds the No. 2 Valley spots in the mile and 3,000-meter run, with times of 4:50.19 and 9:44.72, respectively. She has now set new personal-best times in all three events she has competed in this season.

Before the start of the indoor season, Brewer and the rest of the women’s distance crew captured their second-straight Valley title in cross country, as four members of the squad finished within the top-10 for All-MVC honors. Brewer was the first Redbird across the line, finishing the 5,000-meter race in 17:31 for second place, on the Redbirds’ home course.

For her efforts during the cross country season, Brewer received All-Midwest Region and All-Valley honors, and was named to the MVC Scholar-Athlete team. In addition, this is her second Athlete of the Week honor, as she was named women’s cross country Athlete of the Week Sept. 18.

She joins senior Brittany Smith for being the only two to earn this honor during the indoor track & field season, as Smith was named Field Athlete of the Week twice prior.

Brewer, Smith and the rest of the men’s and No. 26-ranked women’s track & field teams head to Allendale, Mich., this weekend for the Big Meet hosted by Grand Valley State.
