Smith Earns Second-Straight Valley Athlete of the Week Honor

Jan. 23, 2013

ST. LOUIS - For the second-straight week, Illinois State senior thrower Brittany Smith was named the Missouri Valley Conference Female Field Athlete of the Week by the league office Wednesday.

After an Illinois State record-breaking performance of 70-07.00 (21.51m) in the weight throw at the season-opener to earn her first conference distinction, the two-time NCAA Division I runner-up threw together another outstanding series at the Wisconsin Elite Invitational (Jan. 19). The six-time All-American had four throws over 65-00.00 (19.81m), finishing the event in first place with a mark of 68-02.25 (20.78m), one-foot, nine and one-quarter inches further than second-place finisher Taylor Smith of Wisconsin. This series in the weight throw holds true to where Smith left off last season, finishing third at the 2012 NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships.

Smith also posted two third-place finishes at the meet, the first in a Friday night discus throw invitational, where she mustered a throw of 162-07 (49.56m) without any proper training for the event indoor. She then followed that up on Saturday with a 52-11.50 (16.14m) effort in the shot put for third place. She still ranks No. 2 in the nation in the weight throw, as well as No. 9 in the nation in the shot put. She holds the No. 2 spot in both events in the Missouri Valley Conference.

Smith and the rest of the men's and No.26-ranked women's track & field teams stay in Normal, Ill., this weekend, as the teams host the Redbird Invite, its last home meet of the season.
