NORMAL, Ill.  - After a month-long break for the holidays, the Illinois State track & field teams return to action Saturday, Jan. 13,  against Indiana State in the annual dual meet at Horton Field House in Normal, Ill. The meet begins at 12 p.m. (CST) with the men's weight throw. Running events start at 12:30 p.m. with the women's 60-meter high hurdle prelims.

"There has been a change of mindset going into our annual dual meet with Indiana State," said head track & field coach Elvis Forde. "We match up very well this year and feel that it is our turn to take home the trophy."

The Redbirds previously opened their season Dec. 03, with the Early Bird Open held in Horton Field House. Illinois State had some impressive performances that it looks to build off of coming into the weekend. Junior thrower, Brittany Smith, set a new Horton Field House record and personal-best in the weight throw, with a mark of 67-10.75. Junior, Curt Jensen, also added a personal-best performance in the shot put with a throw of 58-09.50.

"We feel very confident with the throwing events," said Forde. "Smith, Jensen, Tori Ziegler and Akil Mills are coming off big performances in our season debut and we look for them to continue their success in the field."

Ziegler took second in the shot put in the season opener with a mark of 47-07.00, while Mills took first in the weight throw with a toss of 60-05.75.

Redbird jumpers Jen Jenkins and Tyler Knight look to build off their second-place performances in the long jump and triple jump, respectively.

On the track, Illinois State will look to Sade Sealy and Fabian Norgrove to continue their successes in the middle-distance events. As for the sprints, Coty Kramer, Nathan Schreiber Shandel Ellis and Alia McAfee will be the ones vying for the top spots.

"It is going to take tremendous effort to beat Indiana State this year," said Forde. "Of all my years coaching the Redbirds, this is the year I feel we can do some special things, starting with bringing that trophy back to Normal."
