NEW ORLEANS - The United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced Thursday that Illinois State senior thrower Brittany Smith was named to the 2013 Bowerman Award Preseason Watch List. The Bowerman Award is bestowed to the best male and female collegiate track & field athlete of that year.
Head track & field coach Elvis Forde thinks Smith is deserving of this honor.
"There is no reason Brittany shouldn't be on the watch list," Forde said. "She is nationally ranked in four events (shot put, discus, hammer throw and weight throw), and has that expectation of being good. She continues to work hard to be better than she was last year and put herself in the same category as Tim [Glover]. It adds fuel to the fire, watching what he has done the last two years and pushes her to continue to have that same amount of success."
Smith finished as the NCAA Division I Runner-up in the shot put and hammer throw at the 2012 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships, throwing marks of 58-04.75 (17.80m) and 224-06 (68.42m), respectively. She earned a spot at the 2012 United States Olympic Track & Field Trials, finishing 11th in the hammer throw (216-07/66.02m) and 10th in the shot put (54-06.00/16.61m). After the trials, Smith traveled down to Mexico for the 2012 North American Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) Under-23 Championships, taking home gold in the shot put (55-10.50/17.03m) and silver in the hammer throw (220-02/67.10m).
She is the first Illinois State women's track & field athlete and second individual in school history to earn this honor, joining classmate Tim Glover, who also earned a spot on the 2013 preseason watch list. She ended her 2012 campaign with a world ranking of No. 37 in the shot put and No. 68 in the hammer throw. Most recently, Smith was named the 2012 Illinois State Jill Hutchison Female Athlete of the Year and jumped to the No. 2 spot on 2013 indoor track & field national descending order list in the weight throw with a career-best and school-record throw of 70-07.00 (21.51m). She also ranks fifth in the nation in the shot put with a mark of 54-06.00 (16.61m).
The 2013 Women's Bowerman Preseason Watch List honorees are as follows:
Brigetta Barrett (Arizona); Tia Brooks (Oklahoma); Diamond Dixon (Kansas); Kimberlyn Duncan (LSU); Katie Flood (Washington); English Gardner (Oregon); Georganne Moline (Arizona); Betsy Saina (Iowa State); Brittany Smith (Illinois State); Ashley Spencer (Illinois).
The Bowerman debuted in 2009 and is presented annually by the USTFCCCA. It is named for the legendary Oregon track & field and cross country coach, Bill Bowerman, who served the sport of track & field in numerous ways. His leadership in the USTFCCCA's predecessor organization, the National Collegiate Track Coaches Association, and his contributions to NCAA track & field and the running community as a whole are among his many lasting legacies.
