Smith Qualifies for NCAA Championships in Hammer

AUSTIN, Texas - Brittany Smith advances to the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the hammer as the Illinois State men's and No. 17-ranked women's track & field teams close competition at the NCAA Preliminary Rounds at Mark A. Myers Stadium.
After fouling her first two attempts in the hammer prelims, Smith bounced back and launched one straight down the sector at 202-07, qualifying her for the final round, as she sat in 10th place. She opened the final round with a mark of 217-02, solidifying her spot at the national championships in June. She finished the event in fifth place.
Mike Ziegler was the only other Redbird to compete in today's events, as he made is NCAA debut in the pole vault. Faced with a steep opening bar set at 16-02.75 and heavy winds, Ziegler failed to clear the height, ending a career at ISU ranked No. 2 all-time in school history.
As it stands now, Smith, Aisha Praught, Tim Glover and Akil Mills all qualified to take part in the national championships set to begin in two weeks. Smith will compete in both the shot put and hammer, while Praught will compete in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Glover will attempt to defend his title in the javelin and Mills will make his mark in the hammer throw.
The national championships will be held June 6-9 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa. The entire meet will be streamed for free live on NCAA.com and will also feature live results for those wishing to follow the quartet that way.
