AUSTIN, Texas - Brittany Smith and Tim Glover finish in the top-12 of their respective events on day one of the NCAA West Region Preliminary Rounds, earning a spot at the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa. Smith achieved this feat in the shot put, while Glover made it possible in the javelin.

Down to her last throw of the preliminary round, Smith mustered a toss of 56-11.50, qualifying her for the final round of the day, as she sat in third place. Since she was a lock for the NCAA Championships, she passed her last three attempts so she could focus on the two events she has left. She finished fourth overall. As for Glover, he threw 246-06 in the javelin on his last throw of the preliminary round, moving him into third on the day and solidifying his spot at the championships. He too elected to pass his final three attempts in hopes to keep himself fresh for the remainder of the season.

The day started with Tori Ziegler in the shot put, where she won her flight with a mark of 49-05.50. However, it wouldn't be enough for her to make it to the finals, placing her 22nd in the West Region. Smith and Glover followed with their performances, before Curt Jensen made his debut at this year's NCAA preliminary rounds in the shot put. Jensen squeaked into the shot put finals after his second throw landed at 58-05.50. He managed to better that mark in the finals to 58-09.50, however not enough to jump into the top 12.

Leigh Petranoff was the last Redbird to compete in the field events, battling the afternoon heat and winds on the javelin runway. She opened with a nice toss of 156-02, but just couldn't get into a rhythm. That mark would stand as her best of six throws, locking her into a 15th-place finish in the region.

On the track, two Illinois State runners tried to advance to the quarterfinals in their respective events. Mat Smoody attempted to advance in the 800-meter run, while Sade Sealy tried to do so in the 400-meter dash. Smoody ran a 1:56.55, finishing eighth in his heat and 46th overall, while Sealy ran a 54.93, finishing 31st.

Eleven Redbirds are slated to compete tomorrow for a chance to make it to the NCAA Championships. Those who compete tomorrow includes: Aisha Praught (steeplechase), Kristen Zillmer (steeplechase), Rachael Brewer (steeplechase), Elise Sigg (steeplechase), Becky Anderson (high jump), Tyler Knight (triple jump), Jensen (hammer), Akil Mills (hammer), Ziegler (discus), Smith (discus) and Kendric Smith (110-meter hurdles).
