AUSTIN, Texas - Brittany Smith qualifies for the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the hammer throw and Sade Sealy advances to the quarterfinals of the West Region, as the Illinois State men's and No. 25-ranked women's track & field teams wrap-up day one of the NCAA West Region Preliminary Round at Mike A. Myers Stadium Thursday evening.

Smith kicked-off the meet for the Redbirds in the hammer throw, the first of three events for her on the weekend, finishing third with a mark of 217-05 (66.28m), the second-best on the season for her. That improvement came on her final throw of the competition, after she had already solidified her spot at the national championships.

Smith is the defending NCAA runner-up in the hammer throw and shot put, and qualified for her third-straight NCAA Outdoor Championships. She is slated to compete in the discus throw tomorrow, followed by the shot put on Saturday.

Sealy ran the second-fastest time of her career to finish second in her heat of the 400-meter dash and advance to the quarterfinals tomorrow. Her time of 52.99 ranked eighth on the day, as she holds the No. 4 time in the nation this year. The senior has never qualified for the NCAA Championships, but has won eight-straight MVC titles in the event in her tenure at ISU.

Shandel Ellis was the only other Redbird to compete on the day, as she too ran in the 400-meter dash. Ellis posted a time of 56.25 and did not qualify for the quarterfinals tomorrow.

ISU returns to Mike A. Myers Stadium tomorrow at 12 p.m., as Smith will compete in the discus throw at that time. Akil Mills will follow at 2 p.m. in the men's hammer throw, with action on the track beginning at 6 p.m., with Sealy in the 400-meter dash quarterfinals. The distance trio of Kelly McShea, Elise Sigg and Kristen Zillmer will close day two of the competition tomorrow in the 3,000-meter steeplechase quarterfinals at 8:50 p.m. Fans wishing to follow the live action can do so on or on Twitter via @ISU_Track_XC.
