DES MOINES, Iowa - Brittany Smith breaks the school-record in the hammer throw with a personal-best mark of 214-02, as the Illinois State men's and No. 12-ranked women's team close the book on the 103rd annual Drake Relays. Smith took second in the event to Missouri Valley Conference foe Jeneva McCall of Southern Illinois.

Smith kicked off the day's events for the Redbirds in the hammer throw competition, having already took second in the shot put yesterday with a mark of 57-05.00, before taking seventh in the discus with a mark of 171-10. She managed to open the competition with a throw of 207-9, just shy of her previous season-best. Down to her last throw of the preliminary round, she mustered out a monster throw of 214-02, five feet further than her season-leading and school mark of 209-08, setting new bests in both categories. That mark landed her a second-place finish on the day, and the second for her on the weekend.

Tyler Knight followed in the men's triple jump, leaping 47-01.50 into the wind, for the second-furthest mark for him on the season. On the track, the Redbirds took the line in four separate events. The first two consisted of both the men's and women's 1,600-meter sprint medley. The men's team, consisting of Nathan Schreiber, Ben Sparkman, Coty Kramer and Mat Smoody, won their heat by four seconds with a time of 3:26.72, placing 11th overall. As for the women, Shandel Ellis, Printassia Johnson, Alia McAfee and Ruth Allen managed to run a 3:59.29, winning their heat for seventh overall.

Flying solo on the track was Elise Sigg in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and Aisha Praught in the 1,500-meter run. Sigg ran to a career-best time of 10:30.88, capturing the seventh position across the line, while Praught ran neck and neck with winner Ashley Miller of Nebraska through 2.5 laps, before pulling out of the race with 600 meters to go.

The Redbirds will fine tune their skills next weekend in Bloomington, Ind., at the Billy Hayes Invitational on May 4, in preparation for the 2012 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships the following weekend, May 11-13 in Wichita, Kan.
