DES MOINES, Iowa - Rachael Brewer and Brittany Smith paced the Redbirds with first-place finishes, as the Illinois State men's and women's track & field teams finish day one of competition at the Jim Duncan Invitational at Drake Stadium.

The day got started with the Redbirds in the field events. Smith posted the top mark in the discus throw, tossing a distance of 160-04 (48.87m). Mahnker Dahnweih finished second, throwing a mark of 147-00 (44.82m). In the men's shot put, Akil Mills paced ISU with a fifth-place finish, throwing 47-08.00 (14.53m). Jen Jenkins followed in the women's long jump, leaping 17-04.75 (5.30m) for second place.

Action carried over onto the track, as a plethora of Redbirds took part in various distance events. Both the men's and women's distance squads had runners make their debut in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Sarah Castel ran her first for the women, while Aidan Askin ran his first for the men. Castel finished fifth with a time of 11:30.94, while Askin finished sixth with a time of 9:57.09.

The women's distance crew, headlined by Brewer, set the tone in the 5,000-meter run, finishing one, two, three and five. Brewer set the pace with her first-place finishing time of 17:06.68. Kelly McShea was right on her heels, turning in a time of 17:11.31, before Elise Sigg crossed the line in third with a time of 17:18.29. Kim Christensen was the only other Redbird to crack into the top five, claiming the fifth spot with a time of 17:34.54.

 

 

On the men's side, Ryan Rutherford and Tyler Morse paced the pack in the 5,000-meter run, finishing second and fifth, respectively. Rutherford turned in a time of 14:45.17, while Morse crossed in 14:56.53.

Kevin Fisch was the only Redbird to compete at a different meet this weekend, as he took on the decathlon at the Lee Calhoun Invitational in Macomb, Ill. There he finished third in the event with a score of 6,137.

ISU returns to the Drake Stadium tomorrow for the conclusion of the Jim Duncan Invitational. The day starts with the field events beginning at 9:30 a.m., with running events starting at 10 a.m.
