Redbirds Dominate Salukis for Sweep of Dual Meet
April 7, 2012
NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State men's and women's track & field teams each out-dueled Southern Illinois in the first annual SIU Dual Meet at the Redbird Track & Field Complex. The men's team won with a score of 114.5 to 84.5, while the women's team took control with a 102-94 victory.
The Redbirds had many top performances on the day, capped off by Leigh Petranoff in the javelin, where she won the event with a MVC, school and facility record of 173-03, ranking her second in the nation with results still to be posted from other meets this weekend. Joining Petranoff with a record-breaking performance was Brittany Smith, who broke her own school-record set just one week ago in the shot put with a mark of 55-02.75.
Head track & field coach Elvis Forde was pleased with how the Redbirds finished today.
"Overall, it was a good meet for us being at home," said Forde. "The team rarely gets to compete at home and when they perform like they did today in beating Southern [Illinois], it is something special for them to go home with. It gave us a good gauge at where we are at and I am very pleased with the performances all around from the throws to the track."
Other top performances for the women included the 3,000-meter steeplechase. In their first-ever steeplechase race, Elise Sigg (10:35.83) and Rachael Brewer (10:36.70) finished second and third, respectively, behind winner Kristen Zillmer (10:33.96) who was the MVC runner-up last year. Currently, the three of them rank one-two-three on the conference best-list. Sade Sealy followed running the second-fastest time in school history in the 400-meter dash, moving her into first place in the MVC with a time of 53.61. Summing up the track performances on the day was Aisha Praught in the 800-meter run. Praught took first with a time of 2:07.93, ranking her first in the MVC and 21st in the nation.
As for the men, Kendric Smith set a new career-best in the 110-meter hurdles, posting a time of 14.34, crossing the line in first. Fabian Norgrove won the 400-meter dash with a time of 48.34, only to come back and win the 200-meter dash with a personal-best time of 21.76. In the field, Tim Glover opened up his 2012 season in the javelin, winning the competition with a mark of 242-10. Curt Jensen followed in the men's shot put, taking first with a mark of 57-04.75.
