CHARLESTON, Ill. - Brittany Smith and Leigh Petranoff combined to break three school records and three meet records, as the Illinois State men's and women's track & field team concludes competition at the EIU Big Blue Classic at O'Brien Field.

Smith set the Big Blue Classic and Illinois State record in the hammer throw on Friday with a personal-best mark of 209-04, only to come back Saturday with another meet and school record in the shot put, tossing a career-mark of 54-08.00. Petranoff broke her previous meet and school record set last year in the javelin, launching a career-best 166-11.

Head track & field coach Elvis Forde is thrilled with the day's performance.

"For our first outdoor meet and first meet in about a month, I cannot complain about the performances our kids brought with them this weekend," said Forde. "We established numerous personal-marks and broke some records in the process. It was a good first showing and the kind of start we as a coaching staff like to see. If we can maintain the high level of practice we have been achieving and carry it into our home meet against SIU, it should prove to be very exciting."

In the men's shot put competition, Curt Jensen set a new career-mark with a distance of 59-03.00, breaking the Big Blue Classic record in the process. As a result, he currently sits in third on the Illinois State charts in the same event. Chris McIntyre followed with a 51-11.75 performance of his own. In the discus, Jensen set another personal-best, reaching a mark 155-01. For the women, Tori Ziegler took second with a personal-best toss of 162-06.

Brian Pflederer followed in the men's javelin, setting a career-mark of 201-09 to finish second. In the men's hammer, Akil Mills continued where he left off in the indoor season, setting a new personal-best of 195-00. Rounding out the field competition for the Redbirds was Lita Wynne in the long jump and Rachelle Harbert in the pole vault. Wynne leaped to a third-place finish with a mark of 18-03.75, while Harbert set a new personal-best with a height of 12-00.50, moving her to second on the ISU all-time performance list.

On the track, Kendric Smith took third in the 110-meter hurdles, posting a time of 14.55. Elise Sigg and Rachael Brewer finished one-two in the women's 5,000-meter run, crossing the line with times of 17:01.93 and 17:04.33, respectively. That was a career-best for Brewer. Kristen Zillmer established two career-marks on the day, the first in the 1,500-meter run (4:29.49) and then followed-up with a 2:13.82 in the 800-meter run.
