ORLANDO, Fla. - Tim Glover breaks the UCF Track & Field Complex record in the javelin and Brittany Smith takes second in the hammer, as the Illinois State men's and women's track & field teams finish day one of the UCF Invite in Orlando, Fla.
Head track & field coach Elvis Forde was pleased with the performance of Glover and Smith, even though the outdoor practice has been limited due to the weather.
"This was a good start to the season for both of them," Forde said. "I was surprised how far the two of them threw in this first meet of the season without much practice outside. It is special to see that happen. It shows how hard the two of them have worked over the years."
Glover opened with a mark of 253-05 (77.24m), which stood as his best on the day, as he took first place by over 67 feet. That mark was also 11 feet, two inches further than the previous facility record, set by Stipe Zunic of Florida last year. That mark also ranks him No. 2 in the nation this year in the college ranks.
"Tim looked very smooth on his approach," Forde said. "He had a great series. He looked relaxed and like he enjoyed this first meet out. I was happy with his performance."
Smith opened with a throw of 201-06 (61.43m) in the hammer, before following it up with a throw of 209-07 (63.89m), her best of the day. She had three more throws over 60-meters, as she finished second in the event to Julia Ratcliffe of Princeton (209-11/63.99m). She stands at No. 4 in the nation, as the second weekend of outdoor competition comes to a close.
"Brittany had a solid series as well," Forde said. "She may be a bit rusty from not having spent a lot of time outside, but she competed well and didn't press too hard. She had a great first showing."
The rest of the Illinois State men's and women's track & field teams continue action tomorrow, as part of the team travels to Edwardsville, Ill., for the Cougar Classic, while the other part finishes up competition at the UCF Invite.
