FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Illinois State senior Brittany Smith earned her eighth All-America honor with a sixth-place finish in the shot put at the 2013 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships Saturday afternoon at the Randal Tyson Track Center on the campus of Arkansas with a throw of 56-02.00 (17.12m).
Head track & field coach Elvis Forde was proud with the way Smith finished her indoor career.
"She had a great indoor season," Forde said. "Sometimes an individual gets fatigued toward the end of a season, but Brittany is a competitor. If you ask her if she is satisfied with the way she finished, I think she will say no. For someone who has meant so much to the program, as a coach you wish she would have finished her indoor career on top, but she had a great day in a tough shot put competition where the collegiate record was broken. I am going to remain optimistic she believes she had a good year and carry everything she has worked for this indoor season into the outdoor season, as she continues to be the most decorated track & field athlete in ISU history."
Smith opened the shot put competition with an easy throw of 53-03.75 (16.25m). She failed to improve her mark on her second toss, only hitting a distance of 52-09.50 (16.09m). Down to her last throw of the preliminary round and sitting in 10th place, Smith mustered a toss of 56-02.00 (17.12m), moving herself into the fifth position and qualifying for the finals.
Smith fouled her first two attempts of the final round before hitting a throw of 54-07.50 (16.65m), failing to improve her mark of the first round, as she finished sixth in the competition for her eighth All-America honor. She continues to add to her stellar career as a Redbird, finishing every NCAA Championship she has competed in with at least one All-America honor.
This concludes the competition for the indoor season for the Redbirds. Both teams will take the next week to prepare for the outdoor season, as the team will split in two to compete at Central Florida and Southern Illinois-Edwardsville March 23.
