Feb. 18, 2012
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Illinois State men's and women's track & field team wrapped up regular season competition for the indoor season Saturday at the Boilermaker Invitation in West Lafayette, Ind. Part of the team competed as a final tune-up for the 2012 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Indoor Championships next weekend.
Head track & field coach Elvis Forde is happy with the results of the meet and hopes it will carry over into the conference championships.
"This meet gave us a chance to allow those who haven't competed in a while to get back into it to see where they are," said Forde. "Overall, I am pleased with the outcome and hope that we can carry it into next weekend. We gave a lot of people rest this weekend and those that competed today showed us that we will be competitive come conference."
On the track, Kendric Smith finally broke the 8-second barrier in the 60-meter hurdles, turning in a time of 7.98, a personal best and second-fastest time in Redbird history. That performance ranks fifth in the MVC. Following suit, Printassia Johnson set a new career-mark in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.90. She has consistently bettered her previous time in each meet she has competed in this season.
In the field, Akil Mills had a solid day in the weight throw competition, showing consistency in each throw, finishing with a mark of 66-01.50, the fourth-best in the ISU record books. Lita Wynne leaped to a season-best mark of 18-05.75 in the long jump, taking first place in the event. That ranks her fourth in the MVC. The women's pole vault also gained confidence as Rachelle Harbert and Emily Swift finished first and third, respectively. Harbert's mark of 12-03.50 is a personal-best and ISU record, while Swift's 11-11.75 is a personal-best by six inches. Brittany Smith rounded out the top-performers in the field, throwing a season-best 55-08.25 in the shot put.
The Redbirds head to Cedar Falls, Iowa, for the 2012 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Indoor Championships next weekend. The meet begins Saturday, Feb. 25 with the women's pentathlon at 9:30 a.m.
