Six `Birds Advance After Day One at Hoosier Relays

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Juniors Devon Williams and Anna Lovell each advanced in two different sprint events, leading the Illinois State track and field team after day one at the Hoosier Relays Friday in Bloomington, Ind. Four other Redbirds also advanced into the finals. The meet will conclude Saturday with the first event at 9 a.m. at Gladstein Fieldhouse.
Williams continued her high level of performance in the 60-meter and 200-meter dashes. The Oswego, Ill., native finished in sixth place (7.60) after racing in the preliminaries of the 60-meter dash and posted her fastest time of the season (24.97) in the 200-meter dash. Lovell advanced in the 400-meter dash with a time of 57.06, while joining her teammate Williams in the 200-meter dash finals by recording a time of 25.28.
Sophomore Sam Springer also advanced in the weight throw, recording a throw of 50-06.25 ft.
On the men's side, sophomore Maxwell Mkwezalamba claimed a spot in the finals for both the 200-meter and 400-meter dashes. Mkwezalamba finished in 12th place in the 200-meter dash with a season-best time of 22.47 while also recording a season-best time in the 400-meter dash (49.33). Junior DeAndre Tillman will also move on to the finals in the 400-meter dash (49.08).
In the weight throw, junior Anton Walzcak advanced into the finals with a preliminary-round throw of 54-10.25 ft.
