Position:
Assistant Coach | Jumps

A former NCAA national qualifier in the high jump and school-record holder at Eastern Illinois, Tim Thompson enters his eighth season at Illinois State after a five-year stint as an assistant coach for jumps, sprints, throws and multi-events at Missouri-Kansas City.

In his seven years at Illinois State, Thompson has proven his worth, developing a strong contingent of jumpers on both the men's and women's squads. To date, he has coached one NCAA national qualifier, 13 NCAA regional jumpers, 27 All-Valley performers and three Missouri Valley Conference Champions.

In 2012, with Thompson's guidance, seniors Tyler Knight and Becky Anderson both posted their best MVC finishes, qualifying for the NCAA West Region Preliminary Round in Austin, Texas. Knight eclipsed the 50-foot mark in the triple jump, leaping to a third-place finish at the Valley Championships with a mark of 50-02.50. Anderson followed suit, leaping to a career-best 5-08.75, taking third at the conference championships and also qualifying for the west regional.

During his tenure, Thompson also coached a number of standouts, including Amanda Albrecth and Alex Straughn. Albrecht was a seven-time All-Valley performer and a two-time MVC Champion in the high jump. She holds the No. 2 spot all-time in ISU history, clearing a height of 5-10.50. She was also a member of the distance medley relay team that took the Valley crown in 2010. Straughn was a five-time All-Valley performer in the high jump and triple jump combined, winning the MVC title in the triple jump in 2008. He was also an NCAA Championships participant.

At UMKC, Thompson coached three NCAA Division I Outdoor Championship participants, one All-American high jumper, a 2001 World Championship participant, 19 UMKC record-holders, 75 all-conference award winners, three conference outdoor record-holders, 31 indoor and outdoor conference champions, three Mid-Continent Athlete of the Year honorees and the 2001 & 2002 Mid-Continent Academic Athlete of the Year.

Prior to UMKC, Thompson was a graduate assistant coach at Eastern Illinois, while working toward his master's degree in education administration. He also received his bachelor's degree from EIU in physical education.

Thompson, who has USA Track & Field Level I and Level II (Jumps) certifications, held the Panthers indoor and outdoor records in the high jump, and was also a three-time Mid-Continent Conference Champion in the event. A member of two Ohio Valley Conference Championship teams, as well as four Mid-Continent Conference Championship teams, he was a four-year varsity letterwinner at EIU.

Thompson and his wife, Stephanie, reside in Pekin, Ill., with their two children, Brayden (9) and Paige (2).
