Mission Statement

Karin L. Bone Athletics Study Center

Illinois State's Academic Assistance Unit is a model other universities have tried to copy. Redbird student-athletes continually rank above the national average for graduation rates among student-athletes, and generally graduate at a higher level than non-athletes at ISU. With specific programs aimed at the unique needs of the student-athlete and a dedicated staff, Illinois State provides one of the most comprehensive academic assistance units in the country.

Three academic advisors from the university's academic advisement center work specifically with student-athletes to ensure progress toward a degree. Those advisors understand the challenges confronting student-athletes, as several are former Illinois State student-athletes.

Working with other areas of the university, academic support personnel are developing career preparation and assessment assistance, resource materials, resume writing, summer jobs in related fields, internships and externships.

The athletics study center staff has developed its own database for every student-athlete at Illinois State. Coaches can monitor academic progress from their offices by computer. Athletics study center computers contain software to help student's complete assignments and access research materials. Self-help study techniques, like self-testing programs, assist students in preparing for specific exams.

Keeping up with class assignments while traveling for competitions can be challenging, which is why the athletics study center has more than 20 laptops available for checkout when teams are on the road.

ISU student-athletes are privileged to be able to register for classes before all university students. Priority registration allows student-athletes to register for classes they need in advance. Tutors are also available to meet the specific needs of student-athletes.

The Karin L. Bone Athletics Study Center is located at 211 North University Street and is open Monday- Wednesday, 8-10:30 pm; Thursday, 8-9pm; Friday, 8-3:00 pm; Saturday - Closed, and Sunday 4-10:30 pm.
