June 7, 2012
TOWSON, Md. - Senior diver Polly Hirtwas recognized for her performance in both the pool and the classroom, when she was selected to the Capital One Academic All-America Women's At Large Team, as voted on by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Thursday. Hirt was a third-team selection in the category.
Hirt is the 43rd Academic All-American in Illinois State history to receive the honor, the first since soccer player Bethany Brown in 2010. She is the first member of the swimming and diving team to earn the award since Deborah Birrer in 2002.
Illinois State diving coach Phil Hoffmannfeels Hirt is deserving of the award based on her academic and athletic performances.
"Polly embodies everything that is needed to be a successful student-athlete," Hoffmann said. "She has succeeded in a challenging academic filed and puts academics first, while also being a leader for our team. She led us during her time as a Redbird, and it is a great accomplishment and way to end her career."
Hirt competed in seven meets for the Redbirds and recorded personal best scores on the one-meter (249.95) and three-meter boards (250.50) at the UIC Diving Invite (Jan. 21). She helped the Redbirds finish second at the Missouri Valley Conference Swimming and Diving Championships with an eighth-place finish on the three-meter board with a mark of 210.55, earning honorable mention All-Valley honors.
The Mundelein, Ill., native was also named to the 2012 MVC Scholar-Athlete Team for the third-straight season. Hirt earned her degree from ISU in nursing with a perfect 4.0 grade-point average (GPA) in May.
