June 5, 2012

NORMAL, Ill. - Academic excellence has always been a pillar of Illinois State Athletics, but Redbird student-athletes have taken that practice to unprecedented levels in recent years with record-setting semesters. The Spring 2012 semester stuck to the pillar with three department and three team grade-point average (GPA) records set.

The athletics department posted a record-setting 3.15 GPA in the Spring 2012 semester, tying the 3.15 GPA from the Fall 2011 semester. Both of the GPAs bested the previous record of 3.13 from the Spring 2009 semester. The nine women's teams combined for a 3.39 GPA, surpassing the 3.37 mark from the Fall 2011 semester for women's sports.

The men's tennis team posted the highest GPA for a men's team for the fifth-consecutive semester with a 3.61. The GPA was the highest in program and men's team history, surpassing the 3.51 the men's tennis team achieved in the Fall 2011 semester.

The best women's GPA for the semester was a 3.56, achieved by the volleyball team. The volleyball team was one of two women's programs to record their best semesters ever, along with the swimming and diving program (3.46).

AFNI Athletics Honor Roll consisted of 233 student-athletes, while 57 student-athletes achieved a 4.0 GPA for the semester. Your online source for Illinois State Athletics, tickets, Weisbecker Scholarship Fund gifts, multimedia, Redbird merchandise, photos and more.
