NORMAL, Ill. - At a recent men's basketball game, the Illinois State Athletics Department recognized 343 student-athletes who were named to the AFNI Athletics Honor Roll during the spring and fall semesters of 2012. During the Spring 2012 semester, the department grade-point average (GPA) was a 3.15 and most recently in the fall 2012 semester, the student-athletes achieved an athletic department GPA of 3.09.
"Our student-athletes should be proud of their efforts in the classroom, as Illinois State had 84 Redbirds earn a 4.0 GPA in either the spring or fall of 2012, while 343 qualify for the AFNI Athletics Honor Roll," Associate Athletic Director/Academics and Life Skills Dr. Paul Downey said. "We set two new team GPA records and had seven teams earn national recognition for their academic accomplishments. We are off to a great start this semester and the AFNI Honor Roll recognition night provides a little extra incentive for our student-athletes to excel in the classroom."
In the spring of 2012, the women's volleyball team won the team GPA award with a 3.56. In the fall, the women's tennis team won with a 3.72, and set a new department record for highest women's GPA.
