Illinois State track and field student-athletes Amanda Albrecht and Brittany Smith were named to the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) 2010 Division I All-Academic Track and Field Team Wednesday afternoon. The honor recognizes student-athletes' accomplishments athletically and academically.

Illinois State sophomore men's golfer Ryan Murphy was named the 2010 recipient of the L. Durwood Boone Endowed Scholarship, as announced by the athletics department Friday. The Boone Scholarship is traditionally awarded to the most improved men's golfer from the previous season.
For the second consecutive year, Illinois State third baseman Ryan Court has been named the recipient of the Fairchild Endowed Scholarship for his continued excellence as a Redbird student-athlete, the Illinois State Athletics Department announced Thursday.

The Canadian Football League (CFL) has honored a former Illinois State player for the second week in a row, as former Redbird quarterback Kevin Glenn was named the Gibson's Finest CFL Offensive Player of the Week for week three, the league announced Tuesday.

Illinois State thrower Brittany Smith will represent her school and country as a member of Team USA at the 13th IAAF World Junior Championships, which will be held July 19-25 at the newly built Stade Moncton 2010 Stadium in Moncton, Canada. Smith will compete in the shot put today.
After playing an instrumental role in the Illinois State Athletics Marketing Department effort over the last two years, Laure Beth (LB) Nagle will have the opportunity to continue to "Spread the Red," after being named the assistant director of marketing.

During college baseball's offseason, Illinois State third baseman Ryan Court is playing 70 games in 76 days for the Border Cats of Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada.
The sixth annual Redbird Fan Fair will take place August 21 on the Illinois State campus and patrons will have the opportunity to enjoy competitive scrimmages and carnival games.
Senior guard Austin Hill walks past the Will Robinson statue in front of Redbird Arena practically every day and he knows why the sculpture was created, that was why Hill was so humbled when he learned about being the recipient of the 2010 Will Robinson Endowed Scholarship.

The 2010 Illinois State volleyball season is just a little over a month away and fans wanting to watch head coach Melissa Myers and her team will have a chance to buy single-match tickets beginning Monday, July 19, at 9 a.m. Tickets can be purchased online at GoRedbirds.com or at the Redbird Arena ticket office.
It is being reported that former Illinois State guard Osiris Eldridge has signed a contract with PINAR Karsiyaka of the Turkish Basketball League. Karsiyaka head coach Hakan Demir announced the agreement after radio reports and a story surfaced on a Turkish website, salsabasket.net. There has been no official announcement by the team.
llinois State's women's golf coach Darby Sligh announced that senior Terra Miller is the Helen Cushman Endowed Scholarship recipient for 2010-11. The scholarship is awarded to a women's golf team member who has shown excellence through academics, golf expertise and dedication to the game.
Three Illinois State student-athletes received 2010 Arthur Ashe Sports Scholar awards, presented by Diverse: Issues In Higher Education magazine. Women's basketball senior Ashleen Bracey, women's soccer senior Raquel Rattray and football sophomore Cliffton Gordon each earned the award that honors the academic and athletic achievements of collegiate student-athletes of color.

Former Illinois State wide receiver Jason Horton helped his Austrian Football League (AFL) team, the Danube Dragons, to the AFL title on Friday by way of a 28-21 victory over the Tyrolean Raiders in Austrian Bowl XXVI in Innsbruck, Austria.
Illinois State head football coach Brock Spack added another big piece to his defensive puzzle, as he announced the addition of freshman transfer Albert Sparks to the Redbird roster for 2010. Sparks transferred to ISU from Buffalo and will have four years of eligibility remaining, after sitting out the 2009 season as a redshirt.
With his blocked shots ending up three-to-four rows deep in the Redbird Arena stands, sophomore Jackie Carmichael has established himself as an Illinois State fan-favorite, which makes him an easy choice to receive the 2010 Bob and Audrey Weber Endowed Scholarship, named after a pair of longtime Redbird fans.
The stands at O'Brien Field will be filled with a lot more fans wearing red than normal, when the Peoria Chiefs and Illinois State combine to host ISU Night, Friday, August 13 . The Chiefs will "Spread the Red" in conjunction with the Illinois State University Greater Peoria Area Alumni Chapter and Illinois State Athletics in their annual evening to honor the Redbirds.
College football prognosticator Phil Steele announced his annual Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) preseason top-40 Thursday and tabbed Illinois State as the No. 13 team in the country. Phil Steele's College Football Preview magazine will hit newsstands next week and will include a full page on every FCS team.
For former Illinois State guard Osiris Eldridge it was better late than never, as the three-time first-team All-Valley selection was a last-second addition to the Portland Trailblazers' NBA Summer League roster.

Former Illinois State guard Emmanuel Holloway will continue his professional basketball career in Europe after signing a contract with Brno of the National Basketball League in the Czech Republic.
So much of the success of Illinois State Athletics can be attributed to the loyalty and passion of Redbird fans. They fill the stands, both on the Illinois State campus and on the road, to cheer loud and hard for their Redbirds. Janyth Aellig's love of Illinois State led to the creation of an endowed scholarship in her memory. Redbird women's basketball junior guard Katie Broadway has been named the recipient of the 2010 Janyth Aellig Endowed Scholarship.
Signing on for its 17th men's basketball season, WFMB-AM 1450 in Springfield will continue to be a part of the Redbird Radio Network for Illinois State men's basketball broadcasts during the 2010-11 athletic season.

Former Illinois State forward Dinma Odiakosa took another step closer to his dream of playing in the NBA Tuesday when he accepted an invitation for a tryout with the Memphis Grizzlies July 8, in Las Vegas, Nev.
The Illinois State men's and women's cross country teams announced their 2010 schedules Tuesday afternoon. The season will consist of eight meets including one home meet being hosted by ISU on the D. A. Weibring Golf Course at Illinois State University.
For the second-straight year, Illinois State football and men's basketball game broadcasts will be available on the Decatur airwaves, as Redbird Athletics and WDZ-AM 1050 "The Fan" signed a partnership continuing the Neuhoff Media station as an affiliate of the Redbird Radio Network.

Illinois State thrower Brittany Smith continued her strong freshman campaign at the 2010 USA Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships where she grabbed a first-place finish in the shot put competition Thursday afternoon at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa. Smith won the event with a throw of 50-06.75.
For the third time this season, Illinois State second baseman Kevin Tokarski has been selected as an All-American. The American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) named Tokarski to the ABCA/Rawlings All-America Second Team and the ABCA All-Midwest Region First Team Thursday.

Former Illinois State pitcher Ryan Copeland made his professional baseball debut Tuesday night for the Johnson City Cardinals, which is the rookie-advanced league affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. Copeland threw three scoreless innings of relief for Johnson City after he entered the game in the fifth inning, and he allowed just two hits. The Cardinals went on to lose their season opener 8-5 to Kingsport.

However, it has also been the most successful for the Redbird thrower and she will continue that run at the 2010 USA Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships, June 23-27, at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa.

Kenny Long has pitched in the Cape Cod Baseball League for little more than one week, but he is already as popular as a rock star to the kids of Orleans, Mass. The Illinois State redshirt junior started playing June 14 for the Orleans Firebirds, which is a team made up of college baseball standouts from across the United States.

Andrews helped lead the Hawks to back-to-back NJCAA national tournament appearances and batted .436 as a sophomore, while leading the team with 13 triples and 65 runs scored to earn Mid-West Athletic Conference player of the year honors. Illinois State redshirt senior forward Kenyatta Sheltonhas been named the recipient of the 2010 Jill Hutchison Endowed Scholarship. Shelton is the 10th recipient of the scholarship named in honor of the former Redbird head coach.
Illinois State head softball coach Melinda Fischer announced the addition of former Heartland Community College standout Elizabeth Andrews on Friday. Andrews, a two-time NJCAA D-II All-American outfielder and Algonquin, Ill., native will join five other Redbird signees for the 2010-11 season.
Illinois State Redbird football fans driving down Main Street may have noticed a new flag flying high above the field at Hancock Stadium. The new red flag, sporting a large white "W" and a Redbird football helmet, signals the start of a new tradition for the Redbird football program.

Illinois State golfer Jeff Kellen was awarded the 2010 D.A. Weibring Endowed Scholarship Monday, after being recognized for his growing merit within ISU academics and athletics.
Continuing a trend of stellar academic performance to go along with an outstanding athletic year, the Illinois State Athletics Department posted a 3.11 cumulative grade-point average (GPA) in the Spring 2010 semester. The Redbirds achieved a department GPA above 3.0 for the fourth-consecutive semester.

In just her first season at Illinois State, freshman Brittany Smith competed with the best student-athletes in the country and finished 19th overall in the discus at the 2010 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships Wednesday night at historic Heyward Field.
What do you get a kid who suddenly has it all? That's the question Timothy Copeland is asking himself after watching his son, Ryan Copeland, a senior left-handed pitcher for Illinois State become one of four players with ties to the Redbirds drafted in the 2010 Major League Baseball Draft.
Kevin Tokarski's assault on the Illinois State baseball record book may be done for the season, but he's not quite finished receiving recognition for it. The redshirt sophomore from Downers Grove, Ill., was named a Ping! Baseball First Team All-American Wednesday.

Illinois State head women's basketball coach Stephanie Glance completed her coaching staff with the hiring of assistant coach Danielle Santos, announced Wednesday. Santos comes to Illinois State from Hofstra and was a player at Florida.
Illinois State freshmen throwers Tim Glover and Brittany Smith have made an immediate impact for the Redbirds in their first full track and field seasons and will look to add to their accomplishments at the 2010 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships, June 9-12, at Historic Hayward Field.
Illinois State senior outside hitter Mallory Leggett received the 2010 Dr. Linda Herman Endowed Scholarship Tuesday, as announced by ISU head coach Melissa Myers. Leggett is the fifth recipient of the scholarship named in honor of the former Redbird volleyball coach and administrator.
John Twork, a graduate assistant in the Illinois State Athletics Media Relations Office, received the second annual Jim Nantz Award from the Sportscasters Talent Agency of America (STAA). The award honors the top collegiate broadcaster in the United States.

After shutting out Bradley (15-34, 5-21 MVC) in three-straight games over the weekend, the Illinois State (32-16, 19-5 MVC) softball team completed the three-game sweep with a series finale win, 6-0, Sunday at the Laura Bradley Park in Peoria, Ill. With the win, the Redbirds finished the Missouri Valley Conference regular-season play in second place.
Evan Kohli hit a three-run home run and JD Learnard limited the Bears to a single run in seven innings as Illinois State swept away Missouri State, 7-1, at Hammons Stadium Sunday afternoon. It was the first road sweep of the Bears by an Illinois State team since 1992.
Senior Stacey Miller ended her collegiate career with her best individual performance in NCAA competition, finishing in a tie for 22nd place. Illinois State finished in 19th place with a 973 (317-329-327) team score at the NCAA Central Regional at Otter Creek Golf Course.
Wind and rain delayed the Illinois State track and field team's last effort to improve their season marks at the Billy Hayes Invitational Friday night, but several Redbirds overcame the difficult conditions to post strong times at the Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex.

The Illinois State softball team swept Missouri Valley Conference rival Missouri State in a doubleheader Sunday afternoon at the Killian Stadium Field on a day of firsts for the Redbird softball program. In the second game, Illinois State hit four-consecutive home runs and recorded a triple play, which was the first time either feat had been accomplished by a Redbird softball team. With the spectacular performance, the Redbirds beat the Bears, 7-3, in the first game and topped MSU, 11-1, in the final game of the day.
The Illinois State men's tennis team fell to Wichita State, 4-1, in Sunday's Missouri Valley Conference Championship match, marking the end of the 2009-10 season for the Redbirds. FreshmanAlexander Pelaez scored the lone point for the Redbirds at the No. 3 court, defeating Valentin Mihai, 6-3, 6-3.
The Illinois State women's tennis team had its season come to an end with a 4-1 loss to Valley regular season champions, Wichita State, in Sunday's championship round of the 2010 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Championships at the Sheldon Coleman Tennis Complex in Wichita, Kan.

The Illinois State men's golf team has been picked to finish in second place at the 2010 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Championship, April 26-27. The Redbirds have finished in the top-three in each of the past nine seasons, with three team titles during that span (2002, 2005, 2007). The two-day, three-round tournament will be held at the par-70, 6,598-yard Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan.
The Illinois State softball team enters its three-game series against Missouri State in a tie for first place in the Missouri Valley Conference standings with Southern Illinois. The Redbirds and the Bears will play a three-game series Saturday-Sunday, in Springfield, Mo. The first pitch Saturday is slated to begin at noon.

The Illinois State men's tennis team claimed the Missouri Valley Conference regular-season title on Senior Day with a, 7-0, sweep of the Drake Bulldogs. Senior Xavier Riart-Ferrer defeated Ryan Drake, 3-6, 7-5, 6-2, on the No. 5 singles court to capture the seventh match point and complete the sweep on ISU's home courts.
They did it again. Illinois State scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to hand Southern Illinois another late-inning loss, 9-7, at Duffy Bass Field Sunday afternoon, while earning its second consecutive Missouri Valley Conference series sweep.

The Buffalo Bills of the National Football Leauge (NFL) announced the signing of former Illinois State running back Walter Mendenhall to a free-agent contract Wednesday. The Bills now have three running backs on the roster, with Fred Jackson and Marshawn Lynch being the others.

This is the first taste of the Mountain West-Missouri Valley Challenge Series for both Illinois State and Utah. The series will feature nine games between the two leagues in each of the next four seasons.
Senior Dinma Odiakosa was the only player from Illinois State to score in double figures with 13 points, as the Redbirds were dealt their second-consecutive loss, falling 75-57 to Ohio in the Convocation Center Wednesday night.
The National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) announced its class of 2010 Hall of Fame inductees, and ISU softball coach Melinda Fischer will receive the elite honor next December.

Illinois State (4-3) ratcheted up its defense in the second half, holding Wisconsin-Milwaukee (5-5) to just 11 points, to beat the Panthers, 51-38, Tuesday night. The Redbirds held the Panthers to the lowest point total by an opponent in nearly 16 years.
The Illinois State soccer team had three student-athletes named to the 2009 Great Lakes All-Region Team, as announced by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
The Illinois State basketball team heads on the road in search of its outside shooting. The Redbirds suffered their first loss of the season Sunday, against Niagara (76-68), while shooting 5-for-23 beyond the arc. ISU is shooting 30.7 percent from three-point range, while tonight's opponent, Ohio, is only allowing a 27.7 percent success rate on treys.

Illinois State's front court combined to score 39 points, keyed a 42-22 edge in the paint scoring, and led 49-28 on the boards, but a three-point barrage by Niagara negated the inside imbalance and helped hand the Redbirds their first loss, 76-68, on Doug Collins Court at Redbird Arena Sunday.

In the history of the made-for-TV-event, the Redbirds have never lost a return game in the BracketBusters series. ISU boasts a 6-0 mark in BracketBusters series return games and are 11-2 all-time in games created by the event.
At the Illinois State Winter Commencement on Saturday, Dec. 12, 27 former Redbird student-athletes will receive their degrees. The group represents 10 ISU sports and five of the student-athletes competed for the Redbirds this fall.

The Illinois State football program doubled its wins from 2008 to finish with a 6-5 record and winning season. The turnaround was a complete team effort and members of the squad were recognized for their hard work by teammates and coaches at the team's annual awards meeting.

For the second time in three years, the Illinois State women's basketball team has been featured in an article on ESPN.com.
Illinois State sophomore middle blocker Tabitha Visk and senior libero Kasey Mollerus were named to the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete team, as announced by the league office Tuesday.
Illinois leads the all-time series with Illinois State, 19-17. ISU posted a 14-2 record to start the series that began in 1972, including wins in the first eight meetings. Since 1985, Illinois is 17-5 against the Redbirds.
Illinois State's Osiris Eldridge tossed in 17 of his game-high 19 points in the first half, and the Redbirds held on for a 69-65 non-conference victory Monday night over UIC at the UIC Pavilion.

Illinois State junior corner back E.J. Jones and senior kicker Zach Kutch earned Missouri Valley Football Conference Defensive and Special Teams Player of the Week honors, respectively, for their role in the Redbirds' season-ending victory over No. 9 Northern Iowa, as announced by the league office Sunday.
Illinois State senior wide receiver Eyad Salem caught nine passes to set a new Illinois State record for receptions in a season, but none were more important than an eight-yard pass from freshman quarterback Matt Lancaster with less than a second remaining to lift the Redbirds to a 22-20 win over No. 9 Northern Iowa at Hancock Stadium Saturday.

Illinois State forward Ashleen Bracey scored a 24 points and pulled down seven rebounds - both game highs - to lead Illinois State to a tough 79-67 win over South Dakota State on Doug Collins Court at Redbird Arena Thursday night.
The Redbirds will have their first of 17 regular-season home games on Doug Collins Court at Redbird Arena when they host North Florida. Illinois State will look to improve to 2-0 on the season, which would mark the third-consecutive season where the Redbirds would begin a campaign with two-straight wins.
The final weekend of Missouri Valley Conference play has arrived and Illinois State's postseason future still hangs in the balance. And to help in the financial burden, the Illinois State Athletics Department has unveiled its special ticket pricing for the holiday season.
There is a lot riding on Saturday's showdown between Illinois State and Northern Iowa at Hancock Stadium. With a win, the Redbirds will secure their first winning season since 2006 and their first win over a ranked opponent since 2007. A win for the Panthers would give them eight wins on the season, all but guaranteeing them spot in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) playoffs for the third-straight season.

This is the only public exhibition for Illinois State before opening the season Sunday at SIU-Edwardsville. Quincy lost to Notre Dame (75-54) and Illinois (84-63), prior to its third exhibition game of the season against the Redbirds. The Hawks begin their regular-season schedule Sunday as well, when they host Upper Iowa.

The Illinois State volleyball team will embark on its final road trip of the regular season this weekend. The Redbirds visit No. 25 Northern Iowa Friday and Bradley Saturday. Both matches are set for 7 p.m.
The Illinois State men's basketball conducted an open scrimmage in front of 1,000 fans on Doug Collins Court at Redbird Arena Wednesday afternoon. The Redbirds went head-to-head over four quarters with the first three being eight minutes in length and the final quarter lasting four minutes. The final result saw the Black team post a 70-53 win over the Red team, as each team changed rosters throughout the workout.
Illinois State senior guard Maggie Krick has been selected as a candidate for the 2009-10 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award in women's basketball. Krick is among 30 finalists who all represent different schools from 14 Division I conferences.
Illinois State senior Scott Krapf, juniors Sarah Glowacki and Kirsten Lang, along with sophomore Aisha Praught were named to the 2009 Missouri Valley Conference Cross Country Scholar-Athlete teams as announced by the conference office Tuesday.

Winners of two straight games, Illinois State returns home for an in-state showdown with Western Illinois Saturday at Hancock Stadium. The Redbirds are coming off an impressive 24-14 road win at Missouri State last Saturday, where they held the Bears to just 31 yards rushing. The Leathernecks have lost their last seven games, including a 14-7 loss Saturday against North Dakota State at home.
After more than two weeks of practice, the Illinois State women's basketball team is ready to open the 2009-10 season against real competition. The Redbirds host Division II Kentuckey Wesleyan in an exhibition game Tuesday at 7:05 p.m.
As if an 18-home game schedule wasn't enough, fans of the Illinois State basketball program will have another opportunity to see the 2009-10 Redbirds in person Wednesday night. Illinois State receiver Brandon Venson caught just one pass during Saturday's contest at Missouri State and he wasn't even the intended receiver. The catch however, was the difference in the game as Venson hauled in a 38-yard tipped hail mary pass from Matt Brown as time expired in the first half to propel the Redbirds to a, 24-14, win over the Bears at Plaster Field.
Scott Krapf won the men's 8K race at the 2009 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Cross Country Championships Saturday, which was held at the Newman Golf Course in Peoria, Ill. Krapf is the first Redbird to capture the individual championship since Christian Goy in 2002.
It was an intense three sets as the Redbirds (10-14, 5-8 MVC) fell to Southern Illinois (17-7, 6-7 MVC) for the first time in 13-straight matches. Junior Mallory Leggett had another historical night by surpassing 1,000 career digs. The `Birds fell to the Salukis in three-consecutive sets (25-23, 25-22, 25-17) Saturday night.
