EVANSVILLE, Ind.– The Illinois State baseball team fell in game two of the series at Missouri Valley Conference-leading Evansville in a 5-3 decision at Charles H. Braun Stadium on Saturday.
Third-year sophomore Keegan Gagliardo threw three scoreless innings in relief for the Redbirds (18-24 overall, 5-9 MVC)
Evansville (26-18 overall, 11-3 MVC) outhit the 'Birds, 11-7.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The 'Birds nearly escaped a jam in the 2nd inning, but a two-strike, two-out single plated a pair of runs for Evansville.
Fifth-year senior Nick Gile doubled home a run in the 4th inning to cut the deficit to 2-1. First-year freshman JT Sokolove made a highlight-reel grab in left-center field in the bottom of the frame.
The Purples Aces extended the lead to 5-1 after seven innings.
In the 9th inning, third-year sophomore Adrian Flores recorded an RBI on a bases-loaded walk before the 'Birds cut to the lead to 5-3 on a ground out. ISU nearly took the lead, but a potential home run sailed just wide of the left field foul pole with two outs.
