Illinois State Walks Off Dallas Baptist on ESPNU

NORMAL, Ill. – The Illinois State baseball team recorded a walk-off 4-3 victory over Dallas Baptist in 10 innings on nationally televised ESPNU on Friday at Duffy Bass Field.

With runners on first and second and one out in the 10th inning, fifth-year senior Nick Gile grounded a ball to second base. The Patriots (25-16 overall, 5-5 Missouri Valley Conference) recorded the force out at second base, but an errant throw allowed third-year sophomore Greg Nichols to score from second base. 

Fifth-year junior Jared Hart provided a strong outing, giving the 'Birds (16-21 overall, 4-6 MVC) seven innings while allowing a trio of runs. Third-year sophomore Erik Kubiatowicz posted scoreless 9th and 10th innings to get the win.

Third-year sophomore Ryan Cermak hit his 16th home run of 2022.

HOW IT HAPPENED  

Second-year sophomore Luke Cheng recorded an RBI in the 2nd inning before sixth-year Aidan Huggins came home on a DBU passed ball.

Cermak led off the 3rd inning with a solo shot to left field to push the lead to 3-0.

The Patriots clawed back, scoring on an errant Redbird throw in the 6th inning prior to an RBI double and sacrifice fly in the 7th inning to tie the game at 3-3.

ISU got a runner to second base in the 9th inning but was unable to get the winning run across.

Kubiatowicz stranded a DBU runner at third in the top of the 10th. With runners on first and second and one out in the 10th inning, Gile grounded a ball to second base. DBU recorded the force out at second base, but an errant throw allowed Nichols to score from second base. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE 

  • Illinois State is now 3-2 in extra-inning games. All three wins have had a 4-3 final while both losses had 7-6 finals.
  • Fourth-year sophomore Justin Schubert threw a scoreless 8th inning.

  • Third-year sophomore Kayden Beauregard threw out two runners at second base from behind the plate.

Illinois State is scheduled to host Dallas Baptist on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. CT and Sunday at 1:00 p.m. CT.
