Illinois State Adds Dedric Boyd

NORMAL, Ill. – Illinois State men's basketball coach Dan Muller has announced the addition of former Eastern Kentucky University standout Dedric (pronounced dead-rick) Boyd to the Redbird roster.

"I couldn't be more excited to add Dedric to our team," said Muller. "With a year to sit out, we can really help him on and off the court. He is a wonderful young man who will represent our program the right way. Dedric is a scoring guard who can play both guard positions, but has the natural ability to score the ball. He will be a terrific player in our program."

Boyd, a native of Brownsville, Tennessee, will sit out the 2018-19 season in accordance with the NCAA Transfer Residency requirement, before having three years to play for Illinois State starting in 2019-20.

He played in 24 games during the 2017-18 season, starting 20. He finished second on the team in scoring, averaging 13.2 points per game, while dishing out 48 assists and grabbing 22 steals. He made 75-of-90 free throws (83.3 percent), and 35.4 percent of his shots from the field (104-of-294). He also pulled down 79 rebounds (3.3 per game), and blocked a pair of shots.

He scored in double figures 15 times as a freshman for the Colonels, including four times in which he scored over 20 points. He had a 17-point, 12-assist double-double against Asbury on November 25, and scored his career-high of 31 points at UT Martin on January 11. Boyd was named the Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Week on Jan. 15, and co-Freshman of the Week on Nov. 13.

Coming out of Haywood High School, Boyd was a three-star recruit, and rated as the No. 4 player in the state of Tennessee and the No. 61 shooting guard in the country by 247Sports. He helped his high school team to the Class AA state title as a sophomore. As a senior he averaged 20.5 points and 5.0 rebounds, earning an All-West Tennessee First Team selection.
