NORMAL, Ill. – The Illinois State swimming team started the 2017-18 season with a win as the Redbirds earned a 185-114 victory in a dual meet with Indiana State Saturday at Horton Pool.
Illinois State's Jensen Keck and Morgan Rosser won two individual events each, while Mary Katherine Tillotson and Karley Licking won one individual event apiece.
Keck finished first in the 100- (1:05.38) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:23.21). Rosser took first in the 500- (5:14.64) and 1000-yard freestyle (10:33.46). Tillotson touched the wall first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:56.96), and Licking earned first in the 100-yard backstroke (58.99).
"I was very pleased with how the team swam today," ISU head swimming coach Scott Cameron said. "Indiana State was great to swim against and were really good competitors today. There were some pretty good swims, but there was a lot we learned that we need to work on going forward, which is great after a meet like this."
Emily Aument led the Redbird divers, finishing first in both the 1-meter (2:45.77) and 3-meter diving events (2:10.89). Elizabeth Aument took second in the 1-meter event (237.75) and Rachel Stein took third (195.14). Stein finished second in the 3-meter diving (193.87), followed by Elizabeth Aument in third (191.17).
"For our first true meet of the season I thought they performed well," ISU head diving coach Phil Hoffmann said. "It was nice to have some solid competition from Indiana State. I'm glad to be able to go against conference opponents any time we can. I was really happy with our newcomers and our returners and look forward to our tri-meet coming up in a month."
The team of Maia Cain, Morgan Clark, Keck and Licking won the 200-yard medley relay (1:49.05), while Kari Balson, Clark, Jessica Nichols and Tillotson made up the winning team for the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:39.10).
The Redbirds will return to action next weekend in a double-dual against Lewis and Illinois Wesleyan in Romeoville, Illinois, on Oct. 7.
