After working as an office assistant in the Illinois State compliance office for several months, Veronica Cardenas will stay on staff as a graduate assistant. In the office, Cardenas is responsible for conducting academic reviews for initial eligibility for prospective student-athletes and communicates with the NCAA Eligibility Center. She also processes official visits, works with fifth-year aid, permission to contact and is in charge of "The Bird" newsletter.
Before joining the Redbirds in 2012, Cardenas worked as a tennis camp instructor at West Virginia camps and was the tennis director at Camp Weequahic. At Camp Weequahic, Cardenas coached campers from ages six to 16 and developed a tennis curriculum, as well as organized and set up all tennis equipment and worked with other program directors.
The Powder Springs, Ga., native played tennis at West Virginia, earning several athletic honors and was a four-year starter for the Mountaineers. She was also a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and the Sport Management Club.
Cardenas earned her bachelor's degree in sport management at WVU, graduating with magna cum laude honors in May 2012. She will pursue a master's degree in Sports Management at Illinois State.
