Former Illinois State gymnast Gina Dew was hired as an academic advisor at ISU in 1985, and since 1990, she has worked specifically with Redbird student-athletes in the Karen J. Bone Athletic Study Center. Dew advises student-athletes who compete on the Illinois State baseball, softball, soccer, gymnastics and men's and women's golf teams.
Dew's responsibilities include working with all freshmen and undeclared students with regards to clarifying degree requirements, preparing them for registration and providing a supportive environment as they make their education choices for their future career. Dew also meets with recruits and their families during visits to campus, and she organizes the summer preview orientation program for incoming athletes.
Dew obtained her bachelor's in exercise science from Illinois State in 1983, and in 1989 she earned her teaching degree in physical education and English. Dew came to ISU on a gymnastics scholarship and competed for the Redbirds from 1979-1983, earning team MVP in 1980 and 1981, and serving as the team captain during the 1982-83 season. She was the first-ever ISU gymnast to place at the NCAA Regional.
