Spent 36 years in the coaching profession, the last 23 years at Illinois State coaching men's and women's track and field and cross country ... Coughlan retired as head coach from the Redbirds in 2000, but not before leaving a legacy of success at Illinois State that includes five top-25 team finishes at the NCAA Championships including a 12th-place finish by the men's squad at the 1999 NCAA Indoor Championships and 24 conference championships ... during his tenure, Coughlan received one National Coach of the Year award (1996 Women's National Coach of the Year), two hall of fame memberships including the Drake Relays Hall of Fame in 1997, 17 Missouri Valley Conference Coach of the Year plaudits, nine District V Coach of the Year awards ... coached 37 all-Americans, 195 national qualifiers in 18 different events, 291 conference champions and 19 MVC Athletes of the Year ... led five athletes to the United States Olympic Trials, and had a USA Track and Field national and junior national champion and a USA Track and Field record holder ... before coming to Illinois State in 1977 from Maine East high School in Park Ridge, was named the Illinois high school coach of the year three times, including the national prep coach of the year, and Midwest Coach of the Year, in 1977 ... his 1970 cross country team won the Illinois high school championship and was ranked No. 1 in the nation by Track and Field News ... was the president of both the Illinois Track Coaches Association and Illinois Cross Country Coaches Association in 1970 ... Normal Rotary International Service Award winner in 1993 ... a graduate of Northern Illinois University.
