Starting defensive tackle and co-captain in football and former shot put record holder in track at Illinois State ... won the Fred Cleland Award in 1972 ... helped hold Western Illinois without a touchdown for the first time in 42 games ... helped ISU to an 8-3 record in the 1972 season ... had a football tryout with the St. Louis Cardinals ... coached football and track and field in the Bloomington and Moline school systems ... in high school, won a state wrestling championship, as well as earning all-state football honors ... transferred to Illinois State as a junior from Fort Dodge (Iowa) Junior College.
