Redbird Athletics Continues To Give Back During The Holidays

NORMAL, Ill. - In addition to the toys collected by the women’s basketball team for Toys For Tots, the Illinois State men’s basketball team is collecting wrapped gifts for the 45th annual Brotherhood Tree at Redbird Arena, Saturday, Dec. 7 at 7:05 p.m., as the ‘Birds battle No. 25 Dayton on Doug Collins Court.
Fans are encouraged to bring wrapped gifts to donate to the Brotherhood Tree that can be placed below the Christmas trees found on the arena concourse. WJBC asks that all gifts please be marked with a tag denoting what is included in the present for easy distribution on Dec. 14.
The tradition of the Brotherhood Tree began in 1969, when the WJBC staff set up a Christmas tree in its front lobby and a staff member came up with the idea of placing presents for families in need below it. In 2012, the WJBC Brotherhood Tree “elves” delivered to 1,743 addresses within McLean County, amounting to 7,959 people receiving gifts.
