Lyons Takes Over as ISU Director of Athletics

July 1, 2013

NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State University announced the appointment of Larry Lyons, C.P.A., as the Director of Athletics, who has previously served various roles within the Redbird Athletics Department and has acted as the interim athletics director once during his career, in the spring of 2011.

Lyons is Illinois State's 11th Director of Athletics in the NCAA Division I era. He has more than 26 years of athletics administration experience at Illinois State with a background in business operations, facility operations, external operations and human resources.

"I was thrilled and honored to be asked to lead the department," Lyons said. "The response from friends, family and the community has been overwhelming and very humbling. It will be the culmination of my career to be an athletic director, especially at this place. It is a special place."

Besides managing the athletics department's budget, Lyons also oversees the Weibring Golf Club and supervises the athletic training, athletic equipment and strength and conditioning units while providing administrative leadership for men's and women's golf and baseball. He also assists with administrative leadership roles with the football and men's basketball programs. In addition, he has been the campus representative on the Illinois State Foundation Board of Directors for 10 years. Lyons served as the athletics department's liaison to the university for human resources, administrative and fee-related projects. He was also instrumental in the department-wide contract with Nike.

During his time with the athletics department, several major facility construction and renovation projects have been completed, including the Kaufman Football Building (2000), Owen Strength and Conditioning Center (2005), Hancock Stadium Fieldturf (2007), video scoreboard installations in Redbird Arena and Hancock Stadium (2007), Gregory Street Tennis Courts (2008), the baseball stadium at Duffy Bass Field (2008), Redbird Arena Media Room (2010), Redbird Arena Video Production Suite (2010), and the Franke Family men's basketball locker room (2012).

In 2008, Lyons managed the conceptual, design and construction progress of the Illinois State baseball stadium at Duffy Bass Field. Before the 2013 season, Duffy Bass Field received a brand new artificial infield designed to help with unfavorable weather that may be experienced during the spring season. Due to Lyons' vision and dedication to all areas of the baseball stadium, the Missouri Valley Conference selected ISU to host the 2013 Valley Baseball Championship for the first time in program history. Lyons was crucial in receiving the bid to host the annual tournament.

Lyons has also had a hand in the Hancock Stadium renovation, which is scheduled to be finished for the first home football game on Sept. 21. The renovations give a new front door to the ISU campus and Bloomington-Normal community. Besides benefiting the community, the renovations to Hancock Stadium will give Redbird fans a new experience on game days, while improving competitive opportunities and providing room for future growth.

Though it is the most visible renovation, Hancock Stadium is not the only Redbird facility scheduled to get a facelift. Current projects under construction include the volleyball locker room and the Jim and Carole Mounier Golf Training Center.

The Illinois State alumnus, who also has a degree from Illinois, serves as the athletics department's liaison to the university for human resources, administrative and fee-related projects. Currently, he serves on the Campus Master Plan Committee, the Long Range Financial Plan Team, the Capital Planning and Budget Team, the Auxiliary Facilities System Review Team, the Data Stewardship and Information Technology Services Council, and the Campus Facilities Charges and Access Work Group.

Lyons earned a bachelor's from Illinois in 1978 and a second bachelor's degree in accounting from Illinois State in 1986. Lyons and his wife, Maureen, reside in Normal, Ill., and have two children, Matt and Kristin.
