NORMAL, Ill. - After entering promotional work samples in seven of the 13 categories offered by the National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators (NACMA) Best of Awards, the Illinois State Athletics Department finished with one gold, one silver and two bronze awards at the organization’s annual national conference.

ISU placed in the top three in four of the seven categories they entered, including the Sponsorship Activation, Single-Day Attendance Promotion, Student Promotion and Video Board Segment categories. In group two of each category, ISU finished with a third place, first place, second place and third place finish, respectively.

The Sponsorship Activation category focuses on whether the sponsor received an increase in traffic or brand awareness, along with goal achievement and originality of the promotion. Most fans would recognize this popular promotion as the “83 & Free” Buffalo Wild Wings promotion run at men’s and women’s basketball games.

ISU utilized its men’s basketball Retro Game and Taste of the Redbirds events hosted on the same afternoon as its submission for the Single-Day Attendance Promotion. The extensive promotion put behind this event through multiple avenues solidified the gold in this category for the Redbirds.

Each school year, ISU Athletics focuses on creating events where students can interact with coaches and athletes on a personal basis, and the Coach Campus Caravan events met that goal, winning the silver medal. An example event from last year would be head men’s basketball coach Dan Muller serving coffee and donuts during finals week at Milner Library.

Lastly, ISU took home the bronze for its men’s basketball introduction video, played before the start of every home game at Redbird Arena, in the Video Board Segment category. A full list of winners, including category and group, can be found here.

Executive Associate Athletics Director Larry Lyons couldn’t be more pleased with the awards Illinois State captured at NACMA.”I am very proud of the creativity and team approach taken by our external units that helped lead to these awards,” Lyons said. “They challenge each other on a daily basis. The awards are well deserved and speak to the talent we have here at ISU.”

With an association-record of more than 1,000 entries received for the 2012-13 school year, NACMA divides each school into one of three groups based upon school size and conference affiliations in an effort to promote fairness. Initiated in 2003, the NACMA Best of Awards program is designed to honor outstanding achievement in marketing and promotions.

NACMA is the first organization of its kind to provide educational and networking opportunities; enhancement of acceptable operating standards and ethics; and establishment of the overall prestige and understanding of the profession of athletics marketing administrators.
