June 14, 2012

NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State's men's cross country, men's and women's tennis and women's volleyball teams have been honored by the NCAA for earning Public Recognition Awards, based on their most recent multi-year Academic Progress Rate, as announced by the NCAA Thursday. These awards are given each year to teams with APRs in the top 10 percent in each sport.

"We like to recognize our student-athletes any time we can for their superior achievements on the field and in the classroom," Associate Athletics Director of Compliance, Cindy Harris, said. "This particular award shines on four of our teams that collectively, year in and year out, demonstrate the importance of focusing on their academic pursuits. We have high expectations for all of our teams and student-athletes academically and very much appreciate the efforts of the student-athletes, their coaches, professors, and support units on our campus that contribute to accolades such as these."

Each year the NCAA honors selected Division I sports teams by publicly recognizing their latest multiyear APR. This announcement is part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams who demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their respective sports.

Redbird men's cross country recorded a 2.96 team GPA in the fall of 2011 and three student-athletes earned AFNI Honor Roll accolades. Freshman Andrew Sandoval, set the standard for the team compiling the highest team GPA with a 3.5.

The men's tennis team set an ISU athletics department record for two-consecutive semesters with a 3.51 GPA in the fall 2011 semester and a 3.61 GPA in the spring 2012 semester. Three team members posted perfect 4.0 GPAs throughout the 2011-12 academic year, as well as freshman Peter Franz who recorded a cumulative 4.0 GPA. The team posted the highest overall GPA for all athletic teams during the spring 2012 semester.

Women's tennis has compiled GPAs above a 3.5 for the past two semesters, including the highest women's team GPA during the fall 2011 semester with a team 3.67 GPA. Three student-athletes have recorded 4.0 GPAs for back-to-back semesters, including senior Hannah Esker, who has sustained a flawless cumulative 4.0 grade-point average.

The volleyball team compiled the highest women's program GPA in the 2012 spring semester. The Redbirds achieved a 3.56 GPA, recording their best semester to date. Five student-athletes recorded perfect 4.0 GPAs, including juniors Shannon McGlaughlin and Angela Rego who've maintained a perfect cumulative 4.0 grade-point average throughout their careers.

The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.
