Three Student-Athletes Receive KNR Academic and Service Awards

Three Illinois State student-athletes were recognized with individual awards at the 2012 Esther Larson McGinnis Academic Achievement and Service Awards for the School of Kinesiology and Recreation (KNR). The three student-athletes that earned awards were Morgan Buechele (swimming and diving), Nichelle Harrison (softball) and Kristin Stauter (volleyball).

Stauter, a senior on the volleyball team, received the Clifford E. Horton Scholarship Award. The award is given to a student-athlete in good academic standing who demonstrates leadership qualities, while promoting the professional aspects of KNR. The senior from Bloomington, Ill., appeared in all 32 matches, starting 31. Stauter led the team in assists (1,117), assists per set (9.39) and service aces (24), while finishing second on the team in digs (327) and third in total blocks (57.0). She was named to the Skyhawk Invitational All-Tournament team in the pre-conference tournament in Martin, Tenn. Stauter has a cumulative grade-point average of 3.83 in physical education.

Buechele, a junior swimmer, also received the Clifford E. Horton Scholarship Award. The Bloomington, Ill., native specializes in the freestyle and breaststroke for the Redbirds. She has a personal-best time of 24.99 in the 50-yard freestyle and a best time of 55.57 in the 100-yard distance race. In the breaststroke, Buechele swam a personal-best time of 1:06.75 in the 100-yard event and 2:24.60 in the 200-yard swim. Buechele has a cumulative GPA of 3.70 in recreation and park administration.

Harrison, a redshirt sophomore on the softball team, received the Trent R. Richards Scholarship Award for the second year in a row. It's a recognition that goes to a student with 55 hours majoring in KNR that has demonstrated strong academic achievement. Harrison has 16 hits, driven in 13 RBI and scored six runs so far in 2012. The Bloomington, Ill., native has struck out only seven times in 72 at bats and has 27 putouts and two assists. Harrison is majoring in athletic training and has a cumulative GPA of 3.91
