March 3, 2009

NORMAL, Ill. - The Weibring Golf Club at Illinois State University will now have a new course superintendent looking after its lush playing greens, as Mike Rayman was named the Weibring Golf Club at Illinois State University Golf Course Grounds Superintendent, the Illinois State Athletics Department announced Tuesday. Rayman was formerly the golf course superintendent at Crestwicke Country Club in Bloomington, Ill.

"It's an exciting time to join the Illinois State University family," said Rayman. "The Weibring Golf Club is a great venue, and I'm looking forward to working with D.A. (Weibring) as we focus on improving the quality of our playing surfaces. I am committed to the vision and mission of the Illinois State Athletics Department, and I am looking forward to the challenges ahead."

Rayman spent 10 years as the golf course superintendent at Crestwicke Country Club in Bloomington, Ill. Prior to that, he was the golf course superintendent at Canton Country Club in Canton, Ill., from 1991-99, after working as the assistant superintendent for three years at the Kankakee Country Club in Kankakee, Ill. Rayman began his career as an assistant superintendent at Silver Lake Golf Club in Orland Park, Ill., from 1986-88.

"I would like to congratulate Mike and welcome him to the home of the Redbirds," said D.A. Weibring, a member of the Illinois State Athletics Hall of Fame who is currently playing in the PGA Champions Tour. "Mike did an outstanding job at Crestwicke Country Club, and he is motivated to apply the same passion to raise the standards at the Weibring Golf Club. My design partner, Steve Wolfard, and I are committed to supporting Mike, (Weibring Golf Club Associate Director) Laura (Provost) and the entire Weibring Golf Club at Illinois State University staff to that goal."

"We are very excited to have Mike take over the superintendent duties at the Weibring Golf Club at Illinois State University," said Larry Lyons, Illinois State's executive associate athletics director. "He emerged as the right fit for us from a deep and talented pool of candidates for the position. With Mike's proven track record at Crestwicke Country Club, we have an opportunity to improve our playing conditions to the consistent and demanding level required by our intercollegiate golf programs. In doing so, our student, staff, alumni and public customers will benefit greatly."

Laura Provost, the associate director of the Weibring Golf Club at Illinois State University, echoed Lyons' sentiments regarding the expertise that Rayman will bring to the position.

"Mike shares our vision for the Weibring Golf Club at Illinois State University, especially our desire to present high-end country-club playing conditions on a daily basis," said Provost. "He brings with him solid business, communication, planning and leadership skills.

"Mike has achieved Certified Professional status as awarded by the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America, which demonstrates his high level of experience relating to agronomy, equipment maintenance, irrigation and water management, in addition to his commitment to continuing education and professional development."

Rayman earned his associate of applied science degree in turfgrass management from Danville Area Community College in 1986. In 2004, he earned professional certification through the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA).
